Helzberg Diamonds was founded by Morris Helzberg in 1915. The first location was in Kansas City, Missouri. Almost immediately after opening the store, Morris Helzberg became very ill, which forced his son Barnett to take over the business at the age of 14. Barnett Helzberg proved himself a savvy businessman even at such a young age. By the end of 1929, the company had expanded to 3 locations.

Barnett Helzberg, Jr., sold the business to the Berkshire Hathaway in 1995. He also authored a book about selling the family business to the owner of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett.

Today, this retail jeweler has more than 234 locations across America. The company specializes in diamond engagement and wedding rings, as well as other types of gold and silver jewelry.

Backcountry.Com was founded by two friends, Jim Holland and John Bresee. The company originally began selling avalanche items online out of their loft in Heber City, Utah. During their first 15 years, the company grew at an outstanding rate and was one of the first profitable online retailers. This two man operation now employs more than 1,200 full time employees.

The company purchased the domain name backcountry.com for $75,000 in 2004

TSG Consumer Partners purchased the company in July of 2015 and a new CEO, Jonathan Nielsen, was announced in March of 2016.

In October 2018, Backcountry.com filed for trademarks protecting the word “backcountry“, then proceeded to file lawsuits against smaller companies with the word “backcountry” in them, such as Backcountry Denim (now known as BDCo), Backcountry eBikes (now known as Backcou eBikes), Backcountry Babes (a female avalanche education clinic), and Marquette Backcountry Skis.

Backcountry.Com is an online retailer of outdoor and hiking gear, including tents, clothing, backpacking gear, skiing equipment, hats, watches, wallets, footwear, and helmets. The company opened its first brick and mortar store in Park City and has plans to open two more locations, despite the coronavirus.

TrackR makes devices the size of coins that can be attached to various items. The tag can then be tracked via the GPS system on smartphones. There are TrackR devices that can make your cell phone ring, even if you have it set to silent, ones that can be placed in your wallet, and tags that can be attached to pet collars.

The company is listed as #155 on the Inc. 5000 list of Fastest Growing Companies in America. TrackR had a three-year growth rate of 2,541% and an annual revenue in 2014 of $2.7 million. The company has 15 employees, with 8 of these jobs being added in the past 3 years.

He adopted typical Asian cuisine to suit American tastes and opened his first restaurant in Rancho Santa Margarita, California.  Pick Up Stix differs from other restaurants by cooking their food at the time of order, using high heat burners in traditional Chinese woks.

The company offers dine in or take out food, a limited delivery area, and off site catering. The company also supplies private schools with a lunch program. Pick Up Stix offers beef, shrimp, and chicken entrees, brown or white rice, fried rice, egg rolls, and a variety of noodle based dishes. The company features their “House Special Chicken”, which is dark chicken meat fried with brown sugar and soy sauce.

The pair opened their first location in Newport Beach, California, because they felt they had to travel too far to find authentic Mexican tacos. They enlisted the help of a Mexican-American friend to be certain they were using an authentic recipe.

The company began franchise operations in 2004. The first franchise was in San Clemente, California.

In 2008, the company opened its first location in Japan.

The Mohammed brothers, Michael, Dave, Dan, and Joey, opened a franchise in Canada in 2010. They loved the company so much that they purchased it for an undisclosed amount in 2012.

Today, Chronic Tacos has 35 locations in California, Nevada, and British Columbia, Canada. All 4 Mohammed brothers work for the company, with Michael acting as both CEO and CFO. The company plans to expand to 100 locations in the next 5 years.

Chronic Tacos celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2021 by doing a nationwide tour.
