Warner Brothers was founded by 4 brothers, Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner. The three oldest brothers were earning money in 1901 by showing 2 films they had paid $150 for in small mining towns in and around Ohio and Pennsylvania. They opened their first theater in New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1903.
By 1904, the brothers began distributing films and by the end of WWI, they were making their own films. Their own studio was opened in 1918 on Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, California. Initially resisting films with sound, the company lost $333,000 in 1926, which resulted in the company adding sound to their motion pictures.
After the release of The Jazz Singer, the company was flush with money once more. Sam Warner died the night before the opening of the film.
The company began producing cartoons in 1935, with Porky Pig, later following this success with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and The Flintstones.
Today, the studio is known for it’s wide array of hit films including the Harry Potter series, The Hobbit, and The Dark Knight.
In 2015, the company had annual revenue of $12.99 billion and more than 8,000 employees. Subsidiaries operated by the company include New Line Cinema, Castle Rock Entertainment, and Turner Entertainment.
In April 2023, Clint Eastwood agreed to direct “Juror #2” for Warner Bros.
Company headquarters are located in Burbank, California.
