Roku actually got its start from Netflix in late 2007. Netflix was about to release its own streaming service set-top box when the CEO wondered what would happen if Netflix released the box and other devices, such as DVD players or game systems, would not allow Netflix to run on their devices.

Roku Remote control

This became the idea that is now called Roku. Roku devices stream Netflix, as well as other channels and services directly to customer’s TV sets. The device has been through multiple changes, with each new update being called a “generation.” Currently, the latest model is the 7th generation, released in September 2018.

Roku Stick Roku is actively searching for more media companies to put their content on their platform, with a portion of the ad revenue benefiting Roku. The company already has a large number of providers that stream on Roku including Hulu, Amazon Video, PlayStation Vue, Redbox, YouTube, and Time Warner Cable.

Roku Menu  In 2017, a Mexican court banned the sale of Roku products after Mexican TV station Televisa complained that the devices were easily hacked and allowed subscription channels to be illegally streamed. Roku made changes to their devices and the ban was lifted in late 2018.

Company headquarters are located in the same building as NetFlix, in Los Gatos, California.

BioPet Labs Corporate Office

BioPet Labs Logo

Tom Boyd founded BioPet Labs in 2008. Boyd says he was fascinated by DNA technology but wanted to find a new way to use it. BioPet Labs has two divisions, PooPrints, and BioPet DNA.

BioPet Labs Swabbing a Dog

Both divisions provide similar services. With more than 40% of people not picking up their dog’s “business”, apartment managers or HOA board members can send samples and BioPet Labs will help to identify the culprit. Cost is $70, but dog owners end up footing the bill when their dog is identified as the guilty party.

BioPet DNA testing goes beyond telling owners exactly what breed(s) their dog is/are, but identifies possible health problems that might develop. Dog breeders can assure their customers that puppies are 100% purebred by using this service.

In 2017, BioPet raked in $7 million. Headquarters are located in Knoxville, Tennessee.

My Vermont Wreaths Corporate Office

myvermontwreaths logo

Katheryn Hackett took her hobby of making wreaths and garlands into a full-time business in 1987 when a friend, who had a mail order business, passed away. Her friend’s husband wasn’t interested in his wife’s business, so Hackett purchased the list of 700 persons and used that as a base for her business.

my vermont wreaths  The company harvests the material for wreaths and garlands from local fields and forests to make their beautiful creations. At least 25% of company sales come during the Christmas holidays, with Hackett making about 1,000 wreaths in 2017.

working at my vermont wreaths Hackett says she likes to think about where each wreath is going and where the person might be placing it. She finds that this busy time of year, when she often works 14 hour days, keeps her “centered.” Hackett’s mother, Betsy Cooke, helps to keep the books and the mailing list, as well as pitching in cutting branches when needed.

The company has two divisions, wholesale and retail, with the wholesale business starting in November 1st. Hackett says that she offers a 100% replacement guarantee, no questions asked. In addition to wreaths and garlands, the company offers pure Vermont maple syrup and Vermont Cabot Cheese.

Company headquarters are located in E. Hardwick, Vermont.
