Thumbtack was founded by several friends who wondered why it was so hard to hire people to do projects or teach them things? In the world of high-tech everything, why did it take up an entire Saturday to call, interview, get estimates, and meet with professionals? Knowing there had to be a better way, this group of entrepreneurs decided that they would create a site that they would use themselves!
The company is an online marketplace which matches professionals to customers. Similar to Angie’s List and HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack offers home repairs, handyman jobs, and painting professionals. Unlike other sites, however, Thumbtack also offers categories and services such as dog training, singing lessons, personal trainers, and DJ’s. Thumbtack states that they have more than 1,000 different types of services available.
The service is free for clients and charges a small fee to professionals who bid on requests for service.
In 2014, Google Capital invested $100 million in the company.
