Helzberg Diamonds Corporate Office

Helzberg Diamonds was founded by Morris Helzberg in 1915. The first location was in Kansas City, Missouri. Almost immediately after opening the store, Morris Helzberg became very ill, which forced his son Barnett to take over the business at the age of 14. Barnett Helzberg proved himself a savvy businessman even at such a young age. By the end of 1929, the company had expanded to 3 locations.

Barnett Helzberg, Jr., sold the business to the Berkshire Hathaway in 1995. He also authored a book about selling the family business to the owner of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett.

Today, this retail jeweler has more than 234 locations across America. The company specializes in diamond engagement and wedding rings, as well as other types of gold and silver jewelry.

Benny’s offers a wide range of items in many departments, including lawn and garden, fishing, pet supplies, candy, seasonal, tires, bikes, sporting goods, automotive, food, electronics, hardware, housewares, and toys. The company also provides hands on services such as tires, paint and stain mixing, as well as providing fishing and hunting licenses.

Unlike other retailers, Benny’s does not do online sales, although the company does have a website showing departments and sale items, as well as a list of locations.  Current CEO Malcom Bromberg states that while the company won’t rule out internet sales, at this time, they have no immediate plans to open up their company to online purchases.

Champs Sports began selling athletic apparel and shoes as the concept of the five and dime department store began to die out. Specialty stores, such as Champs Sports and Foot Locker, became more profitable. As Woolworth closed their department stores, they opened more sporting goods stores, including Champs Sports.

Today, Champs Sports is a subsidiary of Foot Locker and has 547 locations in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In 2012, Nike and Champs Sports launched Nike Yardline. These are stores that specialize in NFL apparel and footwear. This collaboration has proved profitable and both companies state that they are looking to expand these stores in the future.

The company announced in mid-2018 that they were moving out of the Tampa University Mall and setting up shop in a nearby strip mall for improved visibility to the public.

This pair decided to target the outdoor and camping market in the Boston, Massachusetts area and opened their first store in Wellesley. Today, the company has more than 70 locations and employs approximately 1,300 full time employees. The company had annual revenue in 2014 of $330 million.

Eastern Mountain Sports specializes in outdoor sports and camping equipment, clothing, and footwear. Most locations offer classes in everything from mountain climbing to downhill skiing, kayaking to stand up paddle boarding.

The company was purchased in 2012 by Versa Capital Management. The company filed for bankruptcy in April of 2016 and announced that while they would reorganize and retain Eastern Mountain Sports and Bob’s Stores, it would be closing all of its Sport Chalet locations.

Duluth Trading Company sells their products under various trademarks such as Alaskan Hardgear, Bucket Master, and Dry on the Fly. The company has amusing commercials that point out the difference in their clothing from other brands, such as the Longtail T, designed to cover the buttocks, and Dry on the Fly, which is lightweight clothing designed to dry quickly.

The company originally began as an internet only site, but as of January of 2016, has 7 retail stores in Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, along with an Outlet store in Belleville, Wisconsin.
