Automatic Data Processing, known worldwide as ADP, was founded in 1949 by brothers Joe and Henry Taub. The company went public in 1961 with 300 customers. It is still traded publicly on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol: ADP.

The company is a human resource, payroll, and accounting services provider, with offices in the UK and Germany. ADP had revenue exceeding $1 billion by 1985. In 2012, the company reported revenue of $10.66 billion. ADP is the sponsor of the ADP National Employment Report, as well as the ADP Small Business Report.

History

The ADP mobile app has received excellent reviews and has been highly recommended.

The company announced plans in 2014 to spin off their Dealer Services division as its own separate company. The new company spin-off name is CDK Global.

ADP was listed on the Fortune 500 list of the Largest US Corporations by Revenue as #243.

Headquarters for the company are located in Roseland, New Jersey.

Boscov’s department store was founded by Solomon Boscov in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1911. A Jewish immigrant, Boscov began selling items door to door. Soon, he was able to open his own store in downtown Reading. The original name of the company was Economy Shoe Store and Dry Goods Annex. By 1968, the company had 4 stores and had annual revenue of $50 million.

Today, Boscov’s remains one of the last, family owned department stores with sales of more than $1 billion. The company has 44 stores in 7 states, with the largest store in New York. Despite filing for bankruptcy in 2008, the company reemerged in 2009 and began to re-open locations that had been closed due to the bankruptcy.

The company continues to expand, with plans to open a location in Sangertown Square, in Hartford, New York, in the former Sears building, in late 2016. A store opened in 2015 in a former J.C. Penny location in Connecticut, marked the company’s first New England location.

Spanx was founded in 2000 by a former fax machine salesperson, Sara Blakely. While working in the Florida heat, Blakely was unable to find comfortable pantyhose. She realized that most companies used the same size waistband and a toe with a seam. Blakely began to design her own undergarments, including pantyhose with different waistbands, shapewear, and other undergarments.

What began as a business based out of her apartment has turned into one of the most successful undergarment companies in America. Blakely’s $5,000 investment earned $8 million in her first year. Blakely retains 100% ownership of the company. Spanx products are found in all high-end clothing retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bloomingdales, and Bergdorf Goodman, as well as many other upscale clothing retailers, such as Macy’s.

In October 2018, Blakley hinted that she was considering taking the company public.

Forbes profiled Blakely’s company in June of 2014, where the company stated it generated more than $250 million in revenue each year, with a net profit of 20%. The company has headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and recently replaced longtime CEO Laurie Ann Goldman, with former Nike executive, Jan Singer.

Cornwell Tools was founded in 1919 by Eugene Cornwell, a blacksmith, in Ohio. The company manufactures their own line of automotive and diesel tools for the working professional. Two machining plants, one in Ohio, the other in Pennsylvania, produce items such as ratchets, sockets, wrenches, air tools, pry bars, screwdrivers, and chisels. Similar to MAC and SnapOn Tools, hand tools have a lifetime warranty.

Tools are sold by local franchise distributors, each of whom works a given area. Franchise owners drive trucks filled with tools to local works sites. Many franchise owners offer no interest credit to their customers.

While many franchises work their own assigned area, others are also known to sell at auto shows, gun shows, and tool shows to the everyday handy man who is not a professional mechanic.

Link Interactive was founded in 2010 in Ogden, Utah. The company is an offshoot of the Fire Protection Services Company and operates as a subsidiary. CEO Rodney Garner has been with the company since its inception in 1976. Link Interactive is a no frills home security system, frequently sold at Costco locations at a discount.

The company offers the usual alarm monitoring, video surveillance, motion detectors, fire alarms, and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as home automation systems. Customers can monitor and control their devices via their computer or smart phone. Link Interactive recently introduced their 2Gig GoControl panel, which monitors several items in one wireless control panel, including smoke alarms, water detection, freezing conditions, and fire notification.

Link Interactive announced that they plan to introduce a night vision camera with a built in microphone, later in 2016.
