Joseph-Beth Booksellers was founded in 1986 in Lexington, Kentucky, by Neil Joseph and Mary Beth Van Uum. The company name is derived from their middle names combined. The company is an independent bookstore, currently, with 4 locations.

In 1997, the company acquired 4 David-Kidd Book Stores. The company expanded to a total of 9 locations before filing for bankruptcy in 2010. Four locations were sold at auction in 2011, the others liquidated. The current CEO, Mark Wilson, is the former COO of Joseph-Beth.

Mark Wilson has stated he intends to make numerous changes to keep the company profitable, including personally reading each email sent by customers, to adding plenty of kiosks, both manned and self service, so customers do not have to wait in long lines for service. The company has also expanded their eCommerce site.

History

Joseph-Beth Booksellers introduced a coffee bar in 2014 and has plans for expansion, although no firm date has been set.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe was founded as a single fruit smoothie shop in 1993 by Eric and Delora Jenrich, along with David Walker. By 1997, the company had grown and was offering franchises. By 1999, the company began to offer other health food items, such as sandwiches and wraps. By 2007, the company was growing at a tremendous rate, with a store opening, on average, every 7 days.

History

The company was purchased by a private equity firm, BIP, in 2012. The company rolled out new menus, offering items to vegans, and a non-GMO meat substitute called Beyond Meat. Beyond Meat is a blend of protein powders.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe rolls out limited time offers of special drink blends or combo meal prices, three to four times each year. The company states that 50 percent of their sales come from food, the other half from fruit smoothies. There are currently more than 850 Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s in the US.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic of 2020/2021, Tropical Smoothie Cafe continues to open new locations.

On May 30th, 2023, Tropical Smoothie Cafe celebrated National Flip-Flop Day by offering free smoothies.

Aaron Brothers was founded in 1946 by three brothers, Len, Al, and Chuck Aaron. The company operates a chain of art supply and frame shops across the US. Their original idea was to make frames and artwork affordable so that anyone could have a beautiful piece of framed artwork for their office or home. The company began offering art supplies, as well as their own framed prints in the late 60’s.

Aaron Brothers is perhaps known for their 1 cent sale, which they started in 1975. The company offers a second frame, of equal or lesser value, for 1 cent.

The company was purchased by Michael’s Stores, Inc., in 1995. Michaels decided to close all Aaron Brothers stores and simply incorporate them into a store within a store at most Michaels locations. Links to Aaron Brothers have all been changed to Michaels Custom Framing.

Gump’s of San Francisco traces its roots back to 1861, when the Gump brothers, Solomon and Gustav, opened a mirror and frame shop. The company later added gilded frames and artwork, designed for those who hit it big during the California Gold Rush. The original store was destroyed by the earthquake in 1906, but the sale of a single painting allowed the company to rebuild and restock.

Today, Gump’s belongs to an investment group, Gump’s Holdings, to whom it was sold in 2005. The company continues to sell upscale furniture, home decor, jewelry, gifts, and cultured freshwater pearls. The only thing not for sale in the store is a giant gilded wooden Buddah, from the Quing Dynasty, carved sometime in the early 19th century.

In addition to home decor items, the company also sells business furnishings. There are still paper catalogs, as well as an extensive eCommerce site.

History

This restaurant chain is different from most others as it changes its menu with each season, offering food items that are currently “in season”. Their master wine sommelier, George Miliotes, travels personally to different vineyards to choose wines for the upcoming season. The company menu usually offers more than 100 different types of wine at any given time.

Seasons 52 was recently the target of a federal lawsuit in early 2015, which claimed that the chain practiced age discrimination when hiring. The company has denied all allegations.

In May 2023, the company opened its first San Antonio, Texas, location.
