Tropical Smoothie Cafe Corporate Office

Tropical Smoothie Cafe was founded as a single fruit smoothie shop in 1993 by Eric and Delora Jenrich, along with David Walker. By 1997, the company had grown and was offering franchises. By 1999, the company began to offer other health food items, such as sandwiches and wraps. By 2007, the company was growing at a tremendous rate, with a store opening, on average, every 7 days.

The company was purchased by a private equity firm, BIP, in 2012. The company rolled out new menus, offering items to vegans, and a non-GMO meat substitute called Beyond Meat. Beyond Meat is a blend of protein powders.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe rolls out limited time offers of special drink blends or combo meal prices, three to four times each year. The company states that 50 percent of their sales come from food, the other half from fruit smoothies. There are currently more than 850 Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s in the US.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic of 2020/2021, Tropical Smoothie Cafe continues to open new locations. 

On May 30th, 2023, Tropical Smoothie Cafe celebrated National Flip-Flop Day by offering free smoothies.

TCBY (The Country’s Best Yogurt, originally This Can’t Be Yogurt) was founded in 1981 by Frank D. Hickingbotham in Little Rock, Arkansas. The company began franchise operations the next year. Today, the company has more than 470 locations around the globe. TCBY is the world’s largest seller of soft serve frozen yogurt and yogurt dishes.

The company was purchased by Mrs. Fields Cookies in 2000 and the company became Mrs. Fields Famous Brands. TCBY offers both hard serve and soft serve frozen yogurt in a wide variety of flavors, along with drinks such as yogurt smoothies.

TCBY began offering a new type of pricing and service where customers serve themselves, mixing flavors and adding toppings as they like, then paying by the ounce, rather than by scoop, size, or per price of toppings.  This service began in Utah and is spreading to other locations.

While working at an ice cream shop, Kuhnau discovered he was unable to enjoy the milk shakes and other treats because he was lactose intolerant. This inspired him to create similar items using fruit juice and frozen fruit that anyone could enjoy.

Today, the company has more than 600 franchised locations. Kuhnau sold the business to current CEO Wan Kim and Standard Chartered bank. Smoothie King has been named the #1 franchise by Entrepreneur magazine more than 17 times since it began operations.

Smoothie King had annual revenue in 2014 of $160 million. The company began international franchising with the first location opening in South Korea in 2003.

The company offers a variety of fruit juices, fruit juice blends, smoothies, and the original Orange Julius drinks in 6,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada. The company was purchased by Dairy Queen in 1987. Dairy Queen was purchased in 1999 by Berkshire Hathaway.

The company is based in Woodland Hills, California, and originally began as America’s first free internet service provider. NetZero offered free internet, which was paid for by advertising. The company gained 1 million users within the first 6 months and by late 1999, the company became went public on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol NZRO.

In late 1999 and early 2000, others began to copy NetZero’s formula for free internet with targeted advertising. Companies such as Juno, AltaVista, and BlueLight cut into NetZero’s customer base. In 2005, the company dropped their advertising bar and turned to a monthly fee based service. In 2012, NetZero launched their DSL service line, although the company claims they still had more than 750,000 dial up users.
