Ziegler Investment Bank can trace its roots back to 1902 when Ben Ziegler began to make loans to farmers in his home state of Wisconsin. During the 1940s, the bank began to expand to the midwest and southern states.

In mid-April 2020, Ziegler Bank announced that it had closed $61 million in 2020 bonds for the Van Wert Country Hospital Association.

Back in 1981, Don Kotula began selling log splitters out of his garage. A former heavy-duty equipment salesman at Ziegler, Kotula thought he might do better on his own, selling items that he believed people really needed.

Soon, Kotula had so much business that family members need to help him fill orders. Kotula opened his first store in Burnsville, Minnesota.

In 1991, Kotula began manufacturing his own tools and equipment under the NorthStar brand. Sales of NorthStar products make up a full 20 percent of company revenue.

In addition to Northern Tool, the company owns the Golf Warehouse and the Sportsman’s Guide, acquiring both of these companies in 2012.

In March 2020, the company made a fog machine that would spray an antiviral/antibacterial fog, which Northern Tool donated to fire stations in their state so they can disinfect their buildings daily.

In 2023, Northern Tool continues to expand and is opening multiple new locations such as this one in Cincinnati and this one in Kentucky.

Co-workers Derek Brigham and Kyle Nakatsuji knew that they could create a better shopping experience for those seeking affordable car insurance using AI. ClearCover was born out of this idea.

With the average yearly cost of car insurance a whopping $1,100 and more than 13 percent of drivers simply going without due to the cost, it’s no wonder that ClearCover has become very popular.

The company doesn’t spend much on advertising, but word gets around. Currently, ClearCover can only find insurance companies in Arizona, California, Illinois, Ohio, and Utah, but it hopes to expand to all 50 states within 5 years.

In January 2020, the company raised $50 million in series C financing.

The leading roadside assistance program, HONK, is also used by ClearCover, since at least 2019.

Founded in Chicago, the company maintains its corporate office there as well.

Neighbor.com works similar to the way that Airbnb works: people who have extra space, whether it is a garage, an empty lot, attic, or basement, can rent it out to local people who need to store “stuff”.

Neighbor.com insures those with space for $2 million in case their property is somehow damaged by items that are stored or if someone should get hurt while moving the stuff onto their property. Property or homeowners also have the right to reject any client for nearly any reason and they have the right to inspect all boxes or other packages.

Renting through Neighbor.com generally costs half of what a regular storage unit would charge. On average, a typical 5X5 foot storage unit costs $50, but it is half that price on the company website.

Storing on private property is also safer, considering that one in every 5 storage units are broken into every year.

The company raised $10 million in January 2020, in addition to the $2.7 million in seed money raised in March 2018.
