In April of 2011, Reggie Brown brought the idea for a disappearing pictures application to Evan Spiegel since he had prior business experience, Brown thought he could offer advice. Brown and Spiegel then pulled in Robert (Bobby), who had experience in coding. The three worked closely together for several months and launched Snapchat as “Picaboo” on the Apple iOS operating system on July 8, 2011. Reggie Brown was ousted from the company a few months later.
The app was relaunched as Snapchat in September of 2011. Reggie Brown attempted to negotiate a settlement for his share of the company. Lawyers for Snapchat denied that he had anything to do with the creation of the company. In September 2014, the trio reached a settlement where Brown received $157 million and would receive credit for starting the company.
Snapchat is a mobile phone app that provides social networking via photos or “snaps.” One of the core concepts is that any picture or video or message you send – by default – is made available to the receiver for only a short time before it becomes inaccessible. This temporary nature of the app was originally designed to encourage a more natural flow of interaction.
Snapchat recently updated the app so that users can now store photos, rather than see them deleted, with unlimited viewing time.
One of the popular features is the use of stickers, geofilters, and visual effects. 
The company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol SNAP in March 2018. Since going public, the company has grown tremendously, forcing it to move most of its corporate offices to temporary locations in Santa Monica, California. Snapchat says they are looking for a more permanent solution.
In September 2019, a Jacksonville, Illinois, elementary school principal was sent a Snapchat image of what appeared to be a student with a gun at the school. The photo and incident are under investigation.
