When Washington University grad students Tim Hunt, Carl Lipo, Mark Madsen, Dan Shepherd, and David Quinn found themselves unable to find basic recipes online, they created the website AllRecipes.Com in 1997.
All recipes on the website are uploaded by members, then copyedited by staff. Readers give ratings and talk about substitutions or how tasty they thought the recipe was.
In 2006, Reader’s Digest purchased Allrecipes.com for $66 million.
In 2012, Reader’s Digest sold Allrecipes.com to The Meredith Corporation for $175 million.
Search functionality supports requiring and excluding specific ingredients. Other categories include methods (such as grilling or baking), occasions, and cooking style.
Snapchat and AllRecipes have teamed up so that photos of food dishes on Snapchat can be linked to recipes on AllRecipes.Com.
AllRecipes maintains a corporate office in Des Moines, Iowa.
