Gennaro and Carmela Sbarro opened an Italian grocery store named Salumeria in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York in 1956.

The Sbarro family opened more locations throughout New York City, and in 1970 the family opened their first restaurant.

History

From 1970 to 2007 Sbarro opened over 1,000 locations in 44 countries.

In 2007 Sbarro was acquired by MidOcean Partners, a private equity firm.

Today Sbarro restaurants are located in department stores, shopping malls, airports, service areas, cinemas, and college campuses.

The company operates about half of those locations, with the remaining half operated by franchisees.

In April 2022, it was reported that despite the war in Ukraine, some companies such as Hard Rock Cafe and Sbarro were still doing business in Russia.

In January 2023, it was announced that despite the pandemic, Sbarro opened a record number of restaurants in 2022.

Sbarro maintains a corporate office in Columbus, Ohio.

Olive Garden began as a unit of General Mills as part of their restaurant division. Olive Garden is an Italian-themed full-service restaurant.

History

The first Olive Garden opened in 1982 in Florida. The chain quickly became the fastest-growing restaurant in the division having 145 restaurants by 1989.

In 1995 General Mills spun off its restaurant division into a stand-alone company named Darden Restaurants. Olive Garden is Darden Restaurants’ most value-oriented chains, with an average check in 2009 of only $15. The company has received criticism for its claims about a “culinary” school in Tuscany, Italy. There is no school, although the company does send employees to a hotel there during the off-season for a few days each year.

In July of 2014, the company launched a new logo and restaurant design, including the addition of online ordering, as well as smaller lunch portions.

The company introduced keto friendly “zoodles”, which are zucchini cut and cooked to resemble noodles, in June 2019.

Today Olive Garden is a casual dining restaurant specializing in Italian-American cuisine. Olive Garden has more than 800 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Kuwait. In 2016, the company had annual revenue of $3.8 billion, accounting for more than half of the revenue that parent company Darden Restaurants earns.

Dave & Buster’s has its roots in the late 1970s in Little Rock, Arkansas, where two businesses were successful in their own right, side by side in the Missouri Pacific Train Station.

One business was Buster’s Restaurant and the other was Dave’s “Slick Willy’s World of Entertainment.”

History

Buster and Dave became friends and decided to open a restaurant that combined delicious food and the biggest and best arcade games. Their first site was in Dallas, Texas, in 1982.

Today each Dave & Buster’s has a full-service restaurant and a video arcade. There are 133 locations across the United States and Canada. Dave & Buster’s is a subsidiary of Oak Hill Capital Partners, which bought the company in 2010.

Dave & Buster’s has 2,220 employees and had $541 million in revenue in 2011.

The company launched a second IPO on the NASDAQ in 2014 under the ticker symbol: PLAY

Dave and Buster’s had a disappointing second-quarter return posted in September 2019.

In January 2022, co-founder James “Buster” Coley was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Company headquarters are located in Dallas, Texas.

In 1969 Kirk Kerkorian bought a controlling interest in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio.

Because of the debt incurred from this venture, Kerkorian was forced to sell his casino company, International Leisure, to Hilton Hotels. When the casino he had built, the Las Vegas Hilton, became the most successful casino in Las Vegas, he was inspired to lead his new film studio into the gambling industry.

He opened the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in 1973 and the MGM Grand Reno in 1978.

History

In 1979 most of the company’s income was from the two hotel-casinos and the company announced it would split into two. In 1980, the film studio was spun-off into a new company. Founder Kerkorian retained a 47% stake in both companies.

In 1985 Kerkorian sold the two hotel-casinos to Bally’s, retaining the rights to the MGM name in the deal.

The company now known as MGM Resorts International was founded in 1986 as a subsidiary of Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corporation.

In 1993 the company opened the MGM Grand Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Adventures theme park. The final construction cost was $1 billion.

In 1997 MGM opened the New York New York Hotel and Casino, a casino that recreated the New York skyline, across the street from the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

The company continued to grow through mergers, joint ventures, and partnerships.

Today MGM Resorts International focuses on the hospitality industry as well as gaming, and it manages non-gaming hotels and residences worldwide.

MGM Resorts International trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MGM, is #292 in the Fortune 500, and had $9.44 billion in revenue in 2013.

The company was founded as Clipper Trucking Company in 1964. The company expanded to have airline service when it opened Charter One in 1992, a Detroit-based charter tour service operator that offered travel package to destinations such as Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and the Bahamas.

In 1992 Charter One brought jet equipment into its fleet and changed its name to Spirit Airlines.

From 1993 to 1998 Spirit expanded to have routes to Florida, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Los Angeles, and New York.

History

In 2007 Spirit rebranded to become a ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), charging for checked bags and drinks.

Today Spirit trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the symbol SAVE and serves 50 destinations with 40 aircraft. Spirit has 3,619 employees and had $1.65 billion in revenue in 2013.
