Lehman’s Hardware and Appliances, today, simply called Lehman’s, was founded in 1955 by Jay Lehman. His idea was to sell non-electrical and other types of old fashioned tools and hardware to the Amish community in Ohio. Business was nothing more than average until the oil embargo of 1973, when everyone began looking for ways to beat the energy crisis.

Today, Lehman’s specializes in tools and survival gear for environmentalists, survival buffs, Preppers, and those who prefer “off the grid” living. The Amish community used to make up 95% of company sales, today, they account for only about 5% of annual revenue. The company remodeled the store front, using Amish workers, to restore it to its original 1955 facade, although the store has doubled in size over the past decade.

The store is a popular tourist attraction as well, with many people believing that it is a type of museum, when in fact, every item in the store is for sale and is fully functional.

Fazoli’s was founded in 1988 in Lexington, Kentucky. The original name of the company was “Gratzi’s” The company operates a chain of Italian/American style casual restaurants. Franchise operations began in the early 1990s.

History

The company has been sold numerous times over the years. Today, it belongs to Sentinal Capital Partners, a private equity firm. Fazoli’s has grown from a single location to more than 200 restaurants in 26 states, as well as more than 4,500 full-time employees. In addition to franchises, the company offers catering and private banquet rooms in most locations.

The company added a mobile phone app for quick ordering and in late 2017, a customer loyalty program was added to the app.

Fazoli’s has announced plans for expansion into other countries, including Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Franchise operations are popular as a profit is almost always seen from the first year.

The company announced plans to open 10 new franchises in 2019.

During the coronavirus crisis in 2020, Fazoli’s exceeded expectations, with a 410% increase in to-go orders.

Company headquarters are located in Lexington, Kentucky.

Haagen-Dazs was founded in 1961 by Rueben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx, New York. The pair wanted a name that sounded Danish, to honor the country that did so much for the Jewish people during the Holocaust. The company operates a chain of ice cream shops, as well as ice cream products that are sold around the world.

History

The company is famous for its super-premium ice cream that does not use stabilizers, such as guar gum or carrageenan. The company initially had only 3 flavors (vanilla, chocolate, and coffee), but today has more than 90 flavors, although some of them are sold only in certain countries. Haagen-Dazs is a subsidiary of Nestle Brands.

Haagen-Dazs is one of the top-selling ice cream brands in the world, with more than 900 locations in 50 countries, and being sold in virtually every supermarket or corner store across the globe. The company also offers individual ice cream treats such as sundae cones, single-serve cups, and chocolate-coated ice cream bars.

In January 2023, Haagen-Dazs opened its first location in the state of Alaska.

Blistex was founded in 1947 and has headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. The company makes lip care products, including wrinkle reducing, flavored lip balms, moisturizing and healing lip balms, as well as herbal lip care products.

The company also offers other products including Stridex, Kank-A, and Odor-Eaters through other divisions. Blistex is one of the top 3 lip care product companies in the US and is still family owned. Other competitors are Burt’s Bees and Chapstick brands.

The company has suffered from rumors that they are going to discontinue their long time cherry flavored lip balms, but company officials state that this rumor rears its head now and again and that there is “zero chance” that the company will discontinue their #1 flavor.

Since it is privately owned, Blistex does not release annual revenue reports, however, sales reports lists Blistex Original Lip Balm had sales in 2012 of $23.9 million. The company has numerous other brands and flavors.

Happy’s Pizza was founded by Happy Asker in Detroit, Michigan, in 1994. The company operates a chain of pizza and sandwich shops.

The company opens locations where other pizza restaurants won’t or in places where they have failed. The company now has 95 locations in 6 states, most of them franchised. The menu includes more than just pizza, with sandwiches, salads, chicken, wings, shrimp, and seafood. The main emphasis is on pizza, however.

The founder, Happy Asker, and 5 other shareholders were indicted in 2010 on tax evasion and fraud. Asker was found guilty in July of 2015 and sentenced to 4 years in prison, as well as a fine of $2.5 million. Former COO Maher Bashi was also sentenced to 2 years. John Moran has taken over as new CEO.

Despite the company’s legal problems, new locations continue to open and business has continued.
