Sapp Bros. Travel Centers

Brothers William, Ray, Dean, and Lee Sapp decided that they wanted to go into business for themselves. Pooling their money, the brothers first purchased a car dealership in Ashland, Nebraska, before shifting their attention to gas stations. They opened their first station in 1971.

From a single gas station, the company has grown into 17 stations and travel centers, which include cafes, in 9 states. The company is perhaps best known for its coffee pot-shaped signs and logo.

History

The company had annual estimated revenue of $1.5 billion in 2017. The Sapp family was known to be very generous, giving $50,000 to renovate the Oak Bowl Stadium in their hometown.

Genesis Fuel Corp. announced April 16, 2019, that they had reached a discount agreement with Sapp Bros., allowing the company to utilize the Genesis Fuel Card and allow drivers to take advantage of the Digital Diesel fixed diesel prices at Sapp Bros. locations.

The last member of the Sapp Brothers, William, passed away in April 2019. It is unknown at this time who will replace him as CEO. Headquarters for the company remain in Omaha, Nebraska.

Gabi Corporate Office

Gabi Personal Insurance, known to most as simply Gabi, is a mobile phone app and website with an automated insurance search engine that checks the 25 largest insurance companies in the US and compares rates.

The service also constantly monitors changes in insurance rates, notifying clients if a better rate is found at another company. Founder Hanno Fichtner stated in an interview that most brokers and agents are influenced to offer clients companies that might not be the lowest rate since they work on commission.

History

The company currently operates only within the US, but plans to expand internationally. Gabi offers rate comparisons for home, auto, renters, umbrella, and life insurance. While Gabi would like to offer health insurance, at this time, Fichtner says that the market is too volatile and he will wait until at least after the 2020 presidential election.

On signup, clients can send their policies directly to Gabi. The company then analyzes their current coverage and compares the rate with those of major insurance companies to find a better price for the same coverage. By scanning existing insurance documents to create an insurance profile for each customer, Gabi saves the customer the tedious step of entering all the information by hand.

Headquarters for Gabi are located in San Francisco, California.

While in London in 1988, David MacNeil noticed that the floor mats in his rented E-class Mercedes Benz not only fit perfectly, but they were molded so they went up around the edges, preventing water and mud from touching the floor. This made MacNeil wonder why every floor mat was not designed this way.

The following year, MacNeil founded WeatherTech. While he originally imported mats from the UK, he planned on moving everything to the USA as soon as possible; production, materials, marketing, everything.

History

MacNeil is zealous about America and using American workers. “If my neighbor doesn’t have a job because of outsourcing, then one day I won’t have a job either.” MacNeil is fond of repeating. “Experts” continually told him that you couldn’t build a manufacturing plant in the US or that American workers “cost too much,” MacNeil says he simply didn’t listen to the experts.

The factory, located in Bolingbrook, Illinois, offers tours. Everything the company does and produces is now made in the USA.

The company started off manufacturing floor mats but has since added cup holder inserts that hold a mobile phone, protectors for rear seats, car care products, steering wheel covers, and more.

MacNeil was a supporter of Donald Trump, but it is unknown where that stands now since, in 2018, he stated that he wanted Congress and the president to legalize DACA immigrants. One of his employees was (at that time) a DACA member and he doesn’t understand why DACA members aren’t made citizens.

Company headquarters and customer service are located in Bolingbrook, Illinois.

WageWorks Corporate Office

WageWorks

WageWorks was founded by Jon Kessler in 2000. The company operates a health care management system which allows employees and employers to manage health savings accounts, COBRA accounts, and commuter benefits. Kessler left the company in 2007 and is now the CEO of HealthEquity, Inc.

At the end of April 2019, HealthEquity offered to acquire WageWorks for $2 billion. The possible merger is pending.

History

An audit in 2017 found that earnings reports were inaccurate “In a statement, the company said its 2016 revenue of $364.7 million was overstated by a range of approximately $6.5 million to $9.5 million, but that those estimates are preliminary. It also said its 2016 net income would be restated at about $3.5 million to $5.5 million below the reported $20.2 million.”

The company CEO was replaced, while the CFO and other resigned.

WageWorks is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol: WAGE

Joss and Main got its start when entrepreneurs Niraj S. Shah & Steven K. Conine started a small business working out of Conine’s nursery. They called their furniture company Wayfair.

Wayfair was so successful the pair decided to expand and create other subsidiaries; Josh and Main was founded in 2011. This store differs from Wayfair in that it is a membership store. It offers a wide variety of items other than the usual furniture, including outdoor items and furniture, rugs, lighting fixtures, and specially chosen, unique decor items.

History

In addition to online shopping, the company offers a mobile app designed to make shopping fun and easy for consumers.

In 2017, Joss and Main partnered with HGTV to provide furniture and other items for houses that are being renovated and flipped.

A Joss and Main director was featured in the Boston Globe in September 2018, highlighting how she learned to use style tips from her employer to renovate and decorate her family’s Charlestown Victorian home.
