Rentalcars.com was initially founded as TravelJigSaw by Greg and Nicola Willis in 2004. This couple from England realized that online travel booking was the wave of the future.

Booking.com, which belongs to the Priceline Group, acquired the company in 2010 and changed its name to RentalCars.com.

The platform compares rental car prices from most major companies, such as Hertz, National, Avis, Alamo, and Dollar Rent a Car. The company states that reservations can be canceled up to 48 hours without penalty and that they will price match if you should find a lower price elsewhere.

The car rental comparison platform market is expected to record massive growth in the next 5 years.

Intelius Corporate Office

Intelius was founded in 2003 by six former Infospace executives. The company provides information services, including people and property search, background checks, and reverse phone lookup.

In 2006, Intelius acquired Bothell, a background check, drug screening company. In 2009, the company acquired Spock, a people oriented search engine.

The company also created a mobile app for both Android and iOS that allows users to perform people searches, reverse phone lookups and background check services directly from their mobile device.

The company received thousands of consumer complaints regarding post-transaction marketing practices and allegedly deceptive credit card charges. The Washington Attorney General sued Intelius and a $1.3 million settlement was reached in August 2010.

The background check market is expected to boom over the next 5-7 years.

PeopleLooker Corporate Office

The Lifetime Value Company was founded in 2007 by Josh Levy and Ross Cohen. The Lifetime Value Company has since launched several other search engines, including PeopleLooker, BeenVerified, Ownerly, and NumberGuru.

The company specializes in collecting data and information on individuals, even those who do not visit or use the company’s sites.

PeopleLooker is a public record search engine that can perform background checks and reverse phone lookups, as well as email and property searches.

PeopleLooker offers a free trial period of 7 days, after which, clients are charged monthly fees. Numerous complaints state that it can be difficult to stop the monthly charges.

The Better Business Bureau says PeopleLooker is not accredited and that it has a C+ rating.

The parent company, Lifetime Value, was listed in the Inc. 5,000 list of Best Workplaces of 2021.

Lifetime Value Company has headquarters in New York, New York, but PeopleLooker maintains a corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia.

Spokeo Corporate Office

Spokeo was founded in 2006 by four graduates from Stanford University—Mike Daly, Harrison Tang, Ray Chen, and Eric Liang. Originally, Spokeo was operated out of Tang’s basement.

The company operates a people search website that aggregates data from online and offline sources.

The site has evolved to become an information-gathering website that offers various options for finding information about people. It purports to know, among other things, one’s income, religion, spouse’s name, credit status, the number of people in the household, a satellite shot of the house, and its estimated value.

In 2012, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fined Spokeo $800,000 for marketing information to human resource departments for employment screening without adhering to consumer protection provided by the Fair Credit Reporting Act—the first FTC fine involving personal data collected online and sold to potential employers.

The site not only tracks people, but businesses as well, noting a company’s gross margin, production, and annual revenue.

Hippo Insurance Corporate Office

Former Intel Capital investor and consultant to McKinsey, Assaf Wand watched his father work through the antiquated home and auto insurance industry. Wand reached out to successful startup CEO Eyal Navon to start their own insurance company.

Hippo uses AI and big data to aggregate and analyzes property information. The company then sells insurance policies directly to customers and through independent insurance brokers.

In November 2019, Hippo acquired a home maintenance startup company Sheltr for an undisclosed amount.

Hippo is looking to modernize the insurance industry. At the end of March 2020, Hippo teamed up with SimpliSafe, to lower homeowners’ insurance premiums by expanding the suite of services available within Hippo’s extensive smart home program. This will include professionally monitored devices from SimpliSafe, which currently has more than 3 million customers.
