In 1892, William Wrigley, Jr. began placing a package of chewing gum inside a can of baking powder. Soon, the gum became more popular than the baking powder. Wrigley reorganized the factory to make it produce more gum than baking powder.

In 1921, Wrigley also became the owner of the Chicago Cubs.

Originally made from chicle from South America, the company stopped purchasing chicle from Guatemala and now uses synthetic rubber, which is significantly cheaper.

History

In 1974, a supermarket in Ohio became the first company to add a UPC bar code reader. The first product sold using a UPC was a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum. In 1984, the company was the first to introduce a sugar-free gum, Extra.

Today, the company sells its products in more than 180 countries, with production facilities in 14 countries. Mars, Inc., one of the largest candy-making companies in the world, acquired Wrigley in 2008.

Wrigley’s original factory in Chicago was recently overhauled and made into a warehouse distribution center.

Wrigley’s annual revenue in 2007 was $5.389 billion.

When Shanna Tellerman saw the Victorian flat in San Francisco, she simply fell in love with the entire place, including the furniture used in staging the house.

When she moved in with her furniture, she was less than impressed. She tried a few virtual reality apps, but they were all rather “clunky” to use.

Tellerman and her husband West Owens went on to develop their own virtual reality app for customers like herself.

History

Tellerman and her husband named their app Modsy and launched it in 2015. Clients upload photos of their rooms and choose from designs, such as modern or seaside. The app shows furniture from your chosen design from such sites as West Elm, Pottery Barn, Target, and more.

Modsy is proving to be a popular app, with stars such as Real Housewives actress Teddi Mellencamp showing off how she uses this tool for decorating, as well as being listed in House Beautiful.

Headquarters for Modsy are located in San Francisco, California.

Lidl Corporate Office

Josef Schwartz became a partner at Südfrüchte Großhandlung Lidl & Company. Schwartz had been a fruit wholesaler and he was the driving force behind making Lidl a general grocery store.

Josef’s son Deiter began to make his focus on discount markets, larger supermarkets, and cash and carry wholesale markets. Deiter Schwartz is also responsible for renaming the company Lidl in 1977.

Schwartz copied Aldi’s store concept. The company was ruthless in removing merchandise that didn’t sell and cutting costs by keeping stores small in size. This concept worked at the time, allowing Lidl to grow to 33 locations.

History

The company opened its first Lidl store in the UK in 1994.

In 2015, the company announced that it was opening a corporate office in the state of Virginia, USA. Stores were originally planned for the east coast, but by 2017, the company’s success allowed them to quickly open stores on the mid-Atlantic states.

Today, there are more than 10,000 locations, including the US, the UK, and in 28 European countries.

On February 1, 2020, Lidl announced a worldwide recall of Kania brand oregano after tests showed that most of the products contained high levels of an alkaloid that could lead to liver disease and cancer.

Russian immigrant Simon Farber began S.W.Farber company in 1897 when he began making gift racks and trays. The company became official in 1900. Farber began selling matchsticks, later moving to Brooklyn and manufactured a clamp-on light.

Everything changed in 1944 when the company moved to the Bronx and began manufacturing stainless steel pots and pans they called Farberware. During WWII the company made small arms for the government. Simon’s nephew, Sam Farber, joined the company after serving his time in the war.

History

By 1995, Farberware was one of the largest producers of stainless steel cookware in the US.

Today, the company makes and sells a variety of kitchen and cookware. The Neat Nest Stacking Nonstick Frying Pan was labeled as excellent by Consumer Reports in January 2020.

Online site Bustle listed Farberware’s dishwasher safe saucepan with strainer non-stick saucepan as one of the best choices for those who use their dishwashers frequently.

Farberware’s corporate office is located in Needham, Massachusetts.

Loom is a software company that makes sending a video with audio as easy as sending an email.

Loom began as a Google Chrome extension and has morphed into software for IOS and Windows. There is a free version, and a $10 a month “pro” version that offers HD recording, calls-to-action at the end of videos, clip editing, live annotation drawings, and analytics.

The company “looms” largest thanks to customers at Uber, Dropbox, Airbnb, Red Bull and 1,100 employees at HubSpot, and 1.1 million users.

In January 2020, Loom was acquired by ServiceNow.
