Randalls Food Market Corporate Office

Randalls Food Market was founded in 1966 by Robert Onstead, Norman Frewin, and R.C. Barclay. This group of businessmen purchased two older grocery stores that had closed for business. By the end of the 1970’s, the company had 15 locations and almost 10 percent of the Houston, Texas, area grocery market.

The company was acquired by Safeway, Inc., in 1999. All 116 stores retained the Randall name. The company operates as a subsidiary of Safeway.  It’s parent company announced that they were revitalizing all Randalls stores with more “lifestyle” features, such as pharmacies, in store bakeries, film processing, eat in or take and bake pizzas and pasta dishes, to go salad bars, and full service bank branches.

While most grocery stores remained closed during hurricane Ike’s devastation in 2008, Randalls was one of the first to reopen. Even though the Galveston location received heavy water damage, the store reopened very quickly and offered basic supplies to residents, such as water and gasoline.

Matco Tools Corporate Office

Matco Tools was founded in 1946. The company manufactures tools for automotive and diesel professionals. Like Snap On and Cornwell, Matco (which is an acronym for Mac Allied Tool Company) offers a lifetime warranty on hand tools. Matco has been criticized for contracting with machinists in China to manufacture some of their tools.

The company originally made tool boxes, but sold off the tool box division in 1979. The company uses franchisers to sell their tools from trucks. Each franchiser has his own territory, very much like Snap on and Mac tools. Most franchisers offer no interest financing to their customers.

Matco Tools has mobile franchisers in Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. The company operates as a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation.

Boscov’s Corporate Office

Boscov’s department store was founded by Solomon Boscov in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1911. A Jewish immigrant, Boscov began selling items door to door. Soon, he was able to open his own store in downtown Reading. The original name of the company was Economy Shoe Store and Dry Goods Annex. By 1968, the company had 4 stores and had annual revenue of $50 million.

Today, Boscov’s remains one of the last, family owned department stores with sales of more than $1 billion. The company has 44 stores in 7 states, with the largest store in New York. Despite filing for bankruptcy in 2008, the company reemerged in 2009 and began to re-open locations that had been closed due to the bankruptcy.

The company continues to expand, with plans to open a location in Sangertown Square, in Hartford, New York,  in the former Sears building, in late 2016. A store opened in 2015 in a former J.C. Penny location in Connecticut, marked the company’s first New England location.

Spanx Corporate Office

Spankx logo

Spanx was founded in 2000 by a former fax machine salesperson, Sara Blakely. While working in the Florida heat, Blakely was unable to find comfortable pantyhose. She realized that most companies used the same size waistband and a toe with a seam. Blakely began to design her own undergarments, including pantyhose with different waistbands, shapewear, and other undergarments.

Spanx Tights What began as a business based out of her apartment has turned into one of the most successful undergarment companies in America. Blakely’s $5,000 investment earned $8 million in her first year. Blakely retains 100% ownership of the company. Spanx products are found in all high-end clothing retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bloomingdales, and Bergdorf Goodman, as well as many other upscale clothing retailers, such as Macy’s. Spanx store front

In October 2018, Blakley hinted that she was considering taking the company public.

Forbes profiled Blakely’s company in June of 2014, where the company stated it generated more than $250 million in revenue each year, with a net profit of 20%. The company has headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and recently replaced longtime CEO Laurie Ann Goldman, with former Nike executive, Jan Singer.
