Medieval Times Corporate Office

Medieval Times was founded in Kissimmee, Florida, in 1983 by Jose Montaner. Montaner actually began in the 1960s with plays in his native Spain.

In 1983 the Spanish investment group Manver opened the first U.S. show at Orlando near Disney World. In 1986 they opened their second establishment near Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.

The company operates an entertainment arena that offers simulated medieval jousting, sword fights, and other games while patrons eat a buffet-style dinner.

Shows change about every six years, with the latest change being in 2017, where a queen ruled over the games, rather than the traditional king.

Jose’s son Perico Montaner is now the President and CEO of the private company, overseeing 10 locations in 9 states.

In February 2023, workers at the Buena Park, California, location went on strike citing unfair labor practices.

In December 2022, the company donated $10,000 to several food banks across the country.

In 1931, Dwight “Red” Harkins left home in Cincinnati, Ohio, to pursue a career in the “talkies” in Hollywood, California. He ran out of funds in Tempe, Arizona. After working for a few years, he decided to open his own movie house in Tempe, called the Star Theatre in 1933.

Every summer, Harkins Theatres hosts Summer Movie Fun, which is geared for children. The program features 10 children’s movies from the previous year. Harkins developed the program more than 30 years ago as a way to offer parents an affordable summer activity for children.

The company maintains headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona.

In October 2018, the company announced that it would offer a streaming service similar to Netflix with HBO as its base sometime in 2019.

In 2016, the company had annual revenue of $5.89 billion and an operating income of less than $2 billion. Company headquarters remain in New York, New York. HBO operates as a subsidiary of Warner Media.
