Modell’s Sporting Goods, frequently called Modell’s, was founded by Morris Modell in 1889, in Manhattan, New York. Modell’s is the 3rd oldest sporting goods company in America.

Modell’s is still a family-owned business, which today has more than 152 stores, mainly in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The company sells a wide range of sporting apparel, sporting equipment, shoes, hats, and other sports equipment.

The current CEO, Mitchell Modell, was featured on a television episode of Undercover Boss, which aired on November 2, 2012. A lawsuit has since been filed against Modell by their competitor Dick’s Sporting Goods. The lawsuit claims that Modell was using his Undercover Boss disguise to snoop around Dick’s Sporting Goods stores to learn their trade secrets.

Modell’s reported revenue in 2012 of $680 million.

In February 2020 the company announced that it intended to close 24 stores. However, in March 2020, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced that it would liquidate the inventory of its 134 remaining stores. The liquidation began on March 13, 2020, and all stores were closed by the end of August 2020.

The company still maintains an online e-commerce site.

Angie’s List Corporate Office

Angie’s List was founded in 1995 by Angie Hicks and William Oesterle. Oesterle was Hick’s supervisor at a time when Hicks was having difficulty finding a reliable construction contractor. Hick’s moved to Columbus, Ohio, to join in a business venture with Oesterle. The original name of the company was Columbus Neighbors.

The company purchased Unified Neighbors in 1996 and moved their headquarters to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Angie’s List is an online, paid subscription referral service for a wide variety of consumer needs, such as contractors, roofers, auto repair shops, even doctors, and healthcare facilities. The company uses a rating scale similar to grade school report cards with ratings ranging from a perfect “A” to a failing “F”.

In early 2014, the company paid $2.8 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that it automatically renewed members at a higher rate than they were led to believe.

Then in August of 2016, Angie’s List agreed to settle three lawsuits for a payment of $1.4 million. The class action lawsuits focused on the company’s acceptance of advertising payments from service providers, and whether those payments affect service providers’ letter-grade ratings and reviews. Angie’s List denies the plaintiffs’ claims but disclosed that revenue from service providers can affect the order of search-result rankings of the service provider under certain settings.

Angie’s List, now rebranding itself simply as Angie, isn’t all sunshine and roses. Problems with contractors are not unheard of.

Today, Angie’s List has more than 70,000 subscribers and more than 3.2 million paid members. On May 2, 2017, IAC (InteractiveCorp), owner of HomeAdvisor, announced that it had agreed to acquire Angie’s List for $8.50 per share (valuing the company at over $500 million). IAC plans to merge Angie’s List and HomeAdvisor into a new publicly traded subsidiary known as ANGI Homeservices.

The Finish Line actually began operations in October of 1976 when three friends decided to take over The Athlete’s Foot franchise in Indianapolis, Indiana. By 1981, these business partners had opened more than 10 locations. Wanting to expand beyond Indiana’s borders, the owners created their own company, The Finish Line.

The Finish Line had more than 100 stores by October 1991. The company went public in 1992. Today, The Finish Line has more than 670 locations. Each store features a “shoe wall” where more than 1300 brands of shoes are displayed. The company offers a wide variety of athletic shoes for almost every sport imaginable, along with a selection of casual shoes and sandals.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet was founded in 1982 by Morton Bernstein and Oliver Rosenberg in Mechanicsville, Pennsylvania. The company takes its name from Rosenberg and features cartoon pictures of him throughout the stores, in advertising, and on merchandise. Rosenberg passed away in 1996.

The company specializes in surplus merchandise from a wide variety of retailers across the U.S., including going out of business sales, bankruptcy, or overstocked merchandise clearance items. Items sold are as varied as the companies that sell to Ollie’s including clothing, bedding, small appliances, pet supplies, sporting goods, electronics, toys, luggage, home improvement, and hardware.

Jeremys Corporate Office

Jeremys, a high end department store with two locations, was founded in 1987 by current CEO Jeremy Kidson. The original store was named New West and was only one small rented storefront that was open on Saturdays. The company mainly offered clothing samples purchased from local clothing manufacturers. As demand increased, Kidson enlarged his store, added more locations, and was soon selling women’s clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories. Kidson later added menswear and shoes to his stores. The company changed their name to Jeremys in 1993 when Estee Lauder insisted that the name New West was their trademark and demanded that the company stop using it.

From a single storefront in Berkley, California, Jeremys has grown to 4 locations in Berkley and another location in San Francisco. Jeremys recently introduced bridal gowns, shoes, and accessories to their product line.
