Uline Corporate Office

Uline was founded in 1980 by Liz and Richard “Dick” Uihlein. After inheriting money from the Schlitz beer fortune, the couple recognized the need for a local company that could provide shipping materials.

The company sells shipping and other warehouse and business supplies, such as paper, box loaders, shipping labels, box cutters, shipping tape, cardboard boxes, and other items.

In the 2000s, Uline began operations in Mexico and Canada and opened distribution centers in Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Illinois. Over that same period, the Uline catalog grew to 450 pages, giving customers a look at over 17,000 products.

Uline is still family-owned and operated.

The 2020 Uline catalog is a full 795 pages and some people are so inspired by the contents that they consider going into business for themselves.

Due to the Covid crisis of 2020, many companies are finding it difficult to find new employees. Uline is offering up to $27 an hour with a $2,000 sign-on bonus.

The Mirror (Home Gym) Corporate Office

Brynn Putman, a former New York City ballet instructor, wanted to find a way to do a quality workout without leaving home when she was pregnant. She envisioned a high-tech fitness mirror where people could join classes, see instructors, as well as themselves, from the convenience of their own homes.

The Mirror was founded in 2016. Putnam had no way of knowing that her invention would become so popular due to the coronavirus and subsequent quarantine of 2020/2021.

Putnam sold her invention to Lululemon in November 2020 for an estimated $500 million in cash. Some feel that she may have sold too quickly and for too little.

The Mirror uses materials from the USA and the product is assembled in Mexico. While the product itself is a reasonable $1500, there is still a monthly fee involved, which varies.

Putnam, who remains CEO since the company is now a subsidiary of Lululemon, estimates that The Mirror will be a regular item in nearly all residences and that it will also be used to sell other products, such as shoes or workout clothing, within the next 10 years.

Chen’s daughter was allergic to many types of lotions and scents, which saddened Chen when she realized she wouldn’t be able to share the joyous experience of scents with her daughter unless she found a way to do so.

In 2017, Chen founded Skylar. The company creates its own hypoallergenic perfume scents based on a client’s preferences. New clients fill out a survey and new scents are mailed to the client each month.

A former member of The Honest Company, Chen had some experience in operating an e-commerce store, but she did not expect the tremendous success that occurred so quickly. Within one year, Skylar’s sales had boomed more than 2,000%.

His sons, Ken, Dean, and Phil, took over the business and expanded it, creating Nichols Propane apart from the convenience stores.

The brothers also own the 16 store chain of convenience stores, now called Nic’s Pic Kwik, which still offer propane tank refills.

Dean Nichols was named Citizen of the Year by Richmond Community College in 2019.
