Carpeteria stores date back half a century, the company founded in 1960 in Santa Clarita by two brothers, Harold and Ted Haserjian. The company sells and installs flooring for business and residential customers.

At it’s peak the company had almost 60 locations throughout California and Nevada, many of them franchised. By 1999, however, the company was on the brink of bankruptcy, and sold most of its franchises to their respective owners. Today, the company has 5 locations throughout the Northern California area, most of them in the greater San Francisco area.

Carpeteria is best known for the giant 3-D like giant fiberglass Genies perched on top of rooftops, holding a rolled up carpet. The company has two large warehouses for distribution in the Greater Bay area and headquarters located in San Leandro, California.

Empire Today Corporate Office

Empire Today was founded in 1959 by Seymour Cohen, originally as Empire Plastic Covers, in Chicago, Illinois. By 1965, the company had expanded its services to include cleaning and installing carpets and drapes. The name was then changed to Empire Home Services. In 2003, the company was sold and it changed its name to Empire Today.

The company operates a chain of flooring and drapery service, which includes the installation of carpet, hardwood flooring, and window treatments. Floor Covering Weekly has named Empire their #1 or #2 seller of flooring and home improvement services between 2007 and 2010. The company has more than 75 locations and has served more than 1 million customers.

In 2011, Empire Today implemented a carpet and padding recycling program to minimize the environmental impact of their day-to-day operations.

In November 2016, the company announced that they had been acquired by H.I.G. Capital, a private equity company.

In December 2019, the Better Business Bureau awarded Empire Today with its 2019 Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.

Empire Today is best known for their in-home service, including measurements, and next day installation, as well as a simple, but catchy jingle in television commercials. The company has headquarters located in Northlake, Illinois.

National Floors Direct was founded in Avon, Massachusetts, in 2005 by the Rosenberg family. The company operates a chain of discount flooring stores.

The company sells and installs a variety of flooring for both commercial and residential clients, including laminate flooring, carpet, hardwood, and vinyl. National Floors Direct is best known for offering a 15% discount off any competitors flooring price. Currently, the company has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Empire Today, a competitor, sued National Floors Direct in 2011 for unfair sales and marketing practices, claiming that the company was hiring ex-employees of Empire and using their cost price sheets to undercut sales. The jury ruled in favor of National Floors Direct and found the charges all to be untrue, also ordering Empire Today to pay National Floors Direct $500,000 in damages and attorney’s fees.
