Orvis Corporate Office

Charles Orvis opened a tackle shop in Manchester, Vermont, in 1856. His fly fishing reel has been described as the first fully modern fly reel. His family took over the business, including his daughter Mary, who published a reference book regarding fishing flies and their history.

in 1965, the company was sold to the Perkins family, who still own the company. Orvis has become the world’s largest manufacturer of high-quality fishing rods and reels. Between 1982 and 2000, the company acquired six other firms.

Today, the company has 88 retail stores, 11 outlet locations, and an e-commerce site. In addition to fishing equipment, the company also sells a full line of sporting goods and other items, including dog beds, clothing for both men and women, home items such as bedding, doormats, and outdoor furniture, luggage, and personalized gift items.

In October 2019, Orvis released a dog bed that was made from 250 recycled plastic bottles.

Winmark Corporate Office

In 1983, Martha Morris was operating a small used sporting goods store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, called Play It Again Sports. She was a client of a consulting firm run by Ron Olson and Jeffrey Dahlberg. When Morris told the pair that she wanted to make her company a franchise, they had their doubts, however, after a surprise visit to the store, Olson and Dahlberg found more than 10 people waiting in line before the store had even opened.

In 1988, Olson and Dahlberg acquired the store from Morris. Play It Again Sports was the first franchise operation for what would become the Winmark Corporation.

The company went public on the NASDAQ in 1993 and is now listed under the ticker symbol WINA. Winmark owns 5 franchised based companies, all of which sell used goods including Music Go Round, Play It Again Sports, Once Upon a Child, Style Encore, and Plato’s Closet. The company also owns Wirth Business Credit, a small business supply leasing company.

In February 2018, the company listed their year-end sales results for 2017 as $24.565 million and $5.66 per share.

The company acquired its largest competitor, Forest and Stream, in 1930. This popular magazine has been sold several times over the years, most recently to the Bonnier Group in 2007.

The magazine still has more than 1 million paid subscribers, which are becoming increasingly difficult to hold on to as print media gives way to online sources.

Bonnier Group had financial difficulties in late 2016, causing them to cut staff and lay off hundreds of workers, Field and Stream personnel included.

In 2018, Field and Stream sold off their trademark for some items to Dick’s Sporting Goods, who operates Field and Stream shops, which are unrelated to the magazine.

The company filed for bankruptcy in March of 2011 and emerged from chapter 11 later that same year.

Zack’s and other accounting firms are bullish on buying stock in the company, noting that they have made favorable changes to the company in the past 18 months. Time notes that Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops (which owns Cabela’s) and Sportsman’s Warehouse are the last remaining sports retailers that are willing to sell firearms.

In 1968, Randy Repass began selling nylon ropes for fishing and boating out of his garage in Sunnyvale, California. He opened his first store in 1975 in Palo Alto, California, called West Coast Ropes. In 1977, the company acquired West Products and changed its name to West Marine.

In 1991, the company began to expand and open stores on the east coast of the US. The company went public in 1993 on the NASDAQ but unregistered their stock in September of 2017.
