Jon Beekman realized that when it came to buying gifts for women, there were dozens of sites and options, but nothing strictly for men.

Beekman and a few friends began Man Crates in Beekman’s Palo Alto apartment. No one was paid a dime because everything was being invested back into the company.

A few early investors in 2012 enabled Beekman to start receiving a small salary, but the second round of investors came in with $2.5 million in 2014.

History

The company offers gift packages for men that come in a wooden crate that they can open with a crowbar. Packages range from $20 to nearly $200. Every year, Man Crates also puts out a beef jerky advent calendar for the holidays.

Sol Braverman sold a variety of nuts from his store on Mulberry Street in Newark, New Jersey. Originally called Newark Nuts, Braverman’s grandchildren decided to go online to sell their products. In 1999, the company was renamed simply Nuts.Com.

As the name implies, the company sells every type of nut you can imagine; peanuts, pistachios, pecans, and pine nuts, to cashews, almonds, and filberts, in salted, unsalted, and organic varieties.

The company is still owned and operated by the Braverman family. In 2015, the Braverman’s decided they wanted a new look for their product but still retain that “family” feel. The new packaging is cartoon images of nuts designed to look like members of the Braverman family.

Today, the company sells more than 3,000 items online, including dried fruit, flour, even vegan marshmallows.

Rory Health often called Rory or just “Ro”, was founded in 2017. The company is an offshoot of Roman Health, which was designed to deal with men’s health issues. Rory is aimed at women between the ages of 45 and 65 who are seeking care, community, and knowledge around menopause and other women’s issues.

The company says it’s the first platform in the telemedicine space—companies that provide remote medical attention, usually via video chat—to target women in midlife.

Rory offers a variety of products and consultations, from dermatology to menopause, weight management to herpes treatments to eyelashes that have become sparse.

History

The company also offers birth control options. Most over the counter products are available in all 50 states but prescriptions can only be given to states in which Rory has physicians on staff.

Tim Heyl worked in traditional real estate for 10 years. He came upon the same issue over and over; people were unable to put an offer on a new home they wanted to buy because they didn’t have a buyer for their old home yet.

Homeward enables agents to let clients buy the home they want using an all-cash offer, and then sell their current property at full market value. The company is expanding in Texas, Georgia, and Colorado, with plans to offer its solution to agents and homebuyers nationwide.

History

The company raised $105 million in equity funding in May 2020. The company said that it would use the funding to buy more homes for its customers and expand its agent partnerships.

Nichols Propane Corporate Office

Nichols Propane

Charles Nichols started a small convenience store in 1971, selling groceries, gas, and propane tank refills.

His sons, Ken, Dean, and Phil, took over the business and expanded it, creating Nichols Propane apart from the convenience stores.

The brothers also own the 16 store chain of convenience stores, now called Nic’s Pic Kwik, which still offer propane tank refills.

History

Dean Nichols was named Citizen of the Year by Richmond Community College in 2019.

Nichols Propane is perhaps best known for its no-fee tank rental feature. The company maintains a corporate office in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
