The RealReal was founded in 2011 by e-commerce entrepreneur Julie Wainwright.
The company offers used luxury clothing, jewelry, home decor, art, and accessories on consignment. The RealReal employs an in-house staff of experts including horologists, jewelry experts, art curators and luxury fashion authenticators who inspect items for authenticity and value.
The company has established that the first Monday in October as “National Consignment Day.” In 2020, The RealReal announced a sustainability contract with fashion icon Gucci.
In June 2019, The RealReal went public on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol: REAL.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, The RealReal continues to open new locations, including one in Palo Alto, California, in November 2020.
In December 2020, founder and CEO Julie Wainwright sold 135,000 shares, netting $2 million.
The RealReal earned an estimated $300 million in revenue in 2019. In 2022, company revenues increased by more than 55 percent.
