PC Mall

PC Mall was founded by brothers Sam and Frank Khulusi in 1987 as Creative Computers. The company was a mail-order catalog company with products being advertised in catalogs and ordered over the phone.

This first catalog featured one brand of computers, the “Amiga” made by Commodore International. When Commodore failed in 1994 the company began to sell Apple computers.

In 1995 PC Mall expanded its product line to include PC Wintel products.

History

In 1997 the company acquired Computability and Elek-Tek, both of which dealt primarily in PC Wintel products.

In 2001 PC Mall acquired Wareforce, and in 2002 Club Mac.

PC Mall changed its name to PCM, Inc. in 2012.

The company now has 10 operating segments, which range from PC Mall Sales, which provides IT products to small and medium businesses, to OSRP LLC, which provides marketing and customer support and is based in the Philippines.

Today PCM has 2,500 employees and had $1.37 billion in revenue in 2010.

J. Crew Corporate Office

J. Crew was founded in 1947 by Mitchel Cinader and Saul Charles as Popular Merchandise, Inc., which sold low-priced women’s clothing through home demonstration.

In the 1980’s Popular Merchandise started its own catalog under the name Popular Club Plan. The catalog business grew rapidly at 25-30 percent a year. Sales grew from $3 million to $100 million over five years.

In 1989 Popular Merchandise changed its name to J. Crew, named after the popular 1970’s cartoon, Jabberjaw.  That same year the company opened its first retail location in Manhattan.

History

Throughout the 1990’s J. Crew expanded to 35 retail stores and catalog sales in Canada.

J. Crew went public in 2006. The company was taken private in 2010 in a $3 billion deal led by management with the backing of TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners.

Today J. Crew has 400 retail stores, 12,700 employees, and had $1.7 billion in revenue in 2011.

Shutterfly was founded by Eva Manolis and Dan Baum in 1999. At the beginning, Shutterfly faced literally 1,000 competitors, including giants like Walmart, Eastman Kodak, and Yahoo! The company’s odds of survival seemed low, but as of the beginning of 2013 the company had 47 straight quarters of revenue growth.

Jeffrey Housenbold took over as CEO of the company (coming in from eBay) in 2005 and took the company public the next year.

Shutterfly specializes in digital photo products and services for consumers and professional photography markets as well as the ability to upload, store, share, edit, and print photos through its website.

Shutterfly had $600 billion in revenue in 2012 and is valued at $1 billion by investors.

Peapod is an online grocery delivery service that was founded in 1989 by brothers Andrew and Thomas Parkinson.

Before 1996 Peapod provided online grocery shopping in partnership with Jewel, Safeway, Randall’s, and Kroger, depending on the location.

In 1996 Peapod launched its own website and became one of the earliest internet start-ups. The same year Peapod went public on the NASDAQ.

History

In 2000 global grocery giant Royal Ahold bought 51% of Peapod’s shares. The next year in 2001 Royal Ahold bought out the rest of the company.

Today Peapod is available in Philadelphia, Maryland, Virginia, Chicago, Indiana, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Peapod offers 12,000 products including natural and organic, videos, pet supplies, office and school supplies, and prepared foods.

1-800-Flowers was founded by Granville Semmes and David Snow in 1976. The business went through several transformations and finally prospered when it was sold to Jim McCann, an owner of several flower shops, in 1986.

1-800-Flowers received national attention when it was featured in an ad campaign by AT&T that ran during the 1992 Olympics. The company also advertised on CNN during the Persian Gulf War, a time when the war coverage drew additional viewers to the station.

In January 2021, the company announced a revenue growth of 45% in the second quarter.
