Ashley Furniture is a furniture manufacturing and retailer.

History

Founded by Carlyle Weinberger in Chicago in 1945, the company’s specialty was wooden furniture made by local companies, which was resold to larger furniture stores.

In 1970 Ashley invested in Arcadia Furniture, a Wisconsin-based furniture manufacturer founded and operated by Ronald Wanek.

Wanek and a group of investors bought out Weinberger and took over Ashley Furniture. The two companies maintained their separate identities: Arcadia on production and Ashley on sales.

In 1982 the merged company’s annual sales were $12 million.

By the late 1990’s the company was operating assembly and distribution plants in Washington, California, New Jersey, and Florida.

In 2016, annual company revenue reached $3.85 billion.

The Ashley Furniture Homestore chain is composed of both corporate-owned stores and independently owned stores with licenses to sell Ashley Furniture products exclusively. The chain is popular with young persons and newly married couples, mostly due to liberal credit policies with Synchrony Bank.

Today Ashley Furniture manufactures and distributes home furniture throughout the world. The company maintains plants across the United States and also operates several factories (including its largest) in Pacific Rim countries such as Vietnam and China. In addition to those, they also have a sourcing office in India, Vietnam, Southern China, Muar, the furniture hub of Malaysia and Taiwan.

Petco began when Walter Evans opened a mail-order veterinary supplies business in 1965 called UPCO or United Pharmaceutical Company. UPCO’s first customers were ranchers, kennels, and grooming shops.

In 1979 the name of the company was changed to Petco.

In 1980 Evans opened the first Petco store in California.

History

In 1988 Petco acquired two pet supply chains, WellPoint and Pet Department, which tripled the number of Petco stores from 40 to 130.

In 1994 the company went public, trading on the NASDAQ under the symbol PETC. At this time Petco had 218 stores in 13 states.

In 2002 Petco had 600 stores in 48 states.

In 2005 the company expanded to Alaska, and four years later to Hawaii, giving Petco a presence in all 50 states.

In 2006 private equity firms Texas Pacific Group and Leonard Green & Partners took the company private.

Today Petco is #144 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies, has 22,000 employees, and had $3.15 billion in revenue in 2012.

InTown Suites was founded in 1988 by David Vickers. The chain grew quickly, and by 1998 had 26 properties.

In 1998 the company received an investment of $150 million and the chain increased to 76 properties.

History

Today InTown Suites has 196 locations in 22 states, mostly in the Southern and Central parts of the United States.

InTown Suites is an extended-stay hotel chain, offering accommodations for a week or longer that include kitchens, laundry facilities, internet access, and weekly housekeeping.

The weekly rate is between $159 and $259 per week, with no discounts given for shorter stays.

In November 2022, InTown Suites announced a partnership with Hire Heros USA to help veterans gain employment.

InTown Suites is operated by Westmont Hospitality Group, which acquired the hotel chain in 2007 for $781 million.

InTown Suites maintains a corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia.

Paramount Pictures was founded in 1912 as the Famous Players Film Company by Hungarian-born Adolph Zukor. It is the fifth-oldest surviving film studio in the world.

Zukor’s idea was to offer feature-length films featuring the leading theatrical players of the time and appeal to the middle class.

At the same time Jesse L. Lasky opened the Lasky Feature Play Company.

History

Beginning in 1914, both Lasky and Famous Players released their films through a start-up company, Paramount Pictures Corporation, which had been organized earlier that year by theater owner W.W. Hodkinson.

In 1916 Zukor arranged a three way merger of his Famous Players, the Lasky Company, and Paramount.

Zukor was the driving force behind Paramount, and he signed and developed many of the leading early stars.

Paramount nearly collapsed during the Depression, but was reorganized and brought out from bankruptcy in 1936.

Paramount cartoons were successful in the 1930’s such as Betty Boop and Popeye the Sailor.

In the 1960’s Paramount’s aging leadership could not keep up with the times and the company’s future was in doubt. The company was sold to Gulf + Western Industries Corporation, which was able to revive it and produce such hits as The Odd Couple, Love Story, and The Godfather.

Today Paramount Pictures Corporation is a film and television production/distribution studio which is consistently ranked as one of the top-grossing film studios. The studio’s most commercially successful films include Shrek, Transformers, Mission: Impossible, Friday the 13th, and G.I. Joe.

Paramount is a subsidiary of Viacom.
