Universal Corporation was founded in 1911 when American Tobacco Company broke up and Jacquelin P. Taylor formed Universal out of six leaf merchants.

Today Universal Corporation is the holding company for principal subsidiary Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, which buys, sells, processes, packs, ships, and stores leaf tobacco. The company has operations in 30 countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, including the United States, Germany, Belgium, China, and Zimbabwe.

Leaf tobacco is then sold to cigarette makers. Universal Corporation also buys and sells dark tobacco used in smokeless products, pipe tobacco, and cigars.

Universal Forest Products was incorporated in 1955 as The Universal Products as a lumber distributor to the manufacturing housing market by William F. Grant. Grant was the sole owner/operator and salesman until 1962 when he hired Peter F. Secchia.

History

By 1971, the company had annual sales of more than $12 million.

In 1978 the company entered the treated lumber sector when it began producing pressure-treated wood at a plant in Florida. The following year, the company makes its first shipment of treated lumber to Home Depot.

In the 1980’s Universal Forest Products began to market to the DIY market. By 1983, the company is so large that it divides itself into five geographic divisions: Northeast, Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, and Southwest.

In 2005, CEO Matt Missad is named to Fortune’s “Businessperson of the Year” list, an annual ranking of the top 50 corporate leaders in the world.
