The Trump Organization

The Trump Organization has its roots back in Queens in 1906 when German immigrants, Fred and Elizabeth Trump, began buying and selling real estate. Fred died from the flu in 1918, but Elizabeth continued the business. Her son Fred Jr. also began buying and selling real estate.

Fred’s son Donald began working for the family business in 1968. He began calling it The Trump Organization. He focused his efforts on real estate in Manhattan, remodeling the Commodore Hotel, constructed Trump Tower, and the Trump Plaza. He also built several casinos in Atlantic City.

n 1990, the Trump Organization was in financial crisis and was believed by many to be on the brink of collapse, with Donald Trump and his companies owing estimated debts of $3.4 billion. Trump spent the following years renegotiating his debts and gave up some properties, including the Trump Shuttle airline and his stake in the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. In 1995, he took another major step towards financial stability, launching a publicly traded company for the Trump casinos.

The organization has also had operations such as fashion apparel, jewelry and accessories, books, home furnishings, lighting products, bath textiles and accessories, bedding, home fragrance products, small leather goods, barware, steaks, chocolate bars, and bottled spring water.

In September of 2016, the company began operating a chain of hotels called Scion, which are lower priced and are designed to appeal to a younger crowd.

Donald Trump states that he stepped down as CEO and is allowing his children to run the day to day operations of the company after being elected president in 2016. Forbes lists Donald Trump’s net worth as $3.1 billion, although Mr. Trump states that it is more in the area of $10 billion.

Since the financial statements of the Trump Organization’s holdings are private, as are Donald Trump’s personal tax returns, there are only estimates of the Trump Organization’s true value. Donald Trump has been accused on several occasions of deliberately inflating the valuation of Trump Organization properties through the aggressive lobbying of the media, in particular, the authors of the Forbes 400 list, in order to bolster his perceived net worth among the public over the past few decades. He has released little definitive financial documentation to the public to confirm his valuation claims.

In December 2022, The Trump Organization was found guilty of criminal tax fraud in New York.

Sportsman’s Warehouse was founded by Bill Hayes in 1986 in Midvale, Utah. The company sells clothing, footwear, and gear which caters to sports-minded people with interests in hunting, shooting, ammo and reloading, camping, fishing, and other outdoor recreational activities.

The company filed for bankruptcy in March of 2011 and emerged from chapter 11 later that same year.

History

Zack’s and other accounting firms are bullish on buying stock in the company, noting that they have made favorable changes to the company in the past 18 months. Time notes that Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops (which owns Cabela’s) and Sportsman’s Warehouse are the last remaining sports retailers that are willing to sell firearms.

The company currently has 88 locations, but will soon open more after acquiring several of Dick’s Field and Stream stores in September 2019.

After acquiring Field and Stream locations, the company remodeled the buildings and opened 8 new Sportsman locations in October 2019.

Since Dick’s Sporting Goods has dropped their firearm and ammo section, stores such as Sportsman’s Warehouse has found this to be a boon to their sale of firearm’s.

Sportsman’s Warehouse is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol: SPWH. Headquarters are located in Midvale, Utah.

In 1944, pharmacist Benjamin Green decided that he wanted to make a type of skin protection or sunscreen for soldiers in the war. He began mixing various chemicals in his own kitchen and used the bald spot on his head as a means of testing his product.

Originally meant as a sunscreen, Green’s original product, which he called Red Vet Pet, smelled bad and was thick as paste. He began experimenting, adding coconut oil and cocoa butter to his mix. He realized that this product gave some protection but caused the skin to turn a “copper tone” in color. A product was born.

History

Coppertone became a household name after an extremely popular advertising campaign featuring a little girl and her dog, who pulls down her swimsuit bottom to reveal her tanned skin.

The company has had numerous other campaign ads, but none to equal the popularity of the little Coppertone girl.

Today, the company is owned by Bayer, an internationally known conglomerate based in Germany. Headquarters for Coppertone/Bayer in the US are located in Whippany, New Jersey.

Colonial Penn Life Insurance Company, known simply as Colonial Penn, was founded in 1968 by AARP co-founder Leonard Davis. While on vacation in South America, Davis thought of funding a life insurance program for those over the age of 65.

History

Today, Colonial Penn is a subsidiary of the CNO Financial Group. Based out of Philadelphia, the company is best known for its spokesperson, game show host Alex Trebek, as well as for their claims that the company will never refuse insurance to anyone, regardless of health.

The company originally offered life insurance for AARP members over the age of 65 but now offers their products to those between the ages of 50 and 85.

In June 2019, the company introduced Living Insurance with an early payout option.

In April 2021, the company was hit with a class-action lawsuit stating that the company violated the “Do Not Call” list on a regular, persistent basis.

Company headquarters are located in Carmel, Indiana.

Duckworth can trace its roots back to when John Helle’s grandfather purchased ranch land for his sheep in Montana for 2 cents an acre.

For many years the Helle family sold the wool from their sheep to brokers, who often mixed it with lower quality wool and sold it to the highest bidder. John Helle says he always wondered where their product ended up being used. In 2014, the family decided that they were going to start making their own products using just the Merino wool from their own sheep.
