David Rogier and Aaron Rasmussen founded Yanka Industries and registered their website under the name MasterClass in 2014. The website is a subscription-based online education platform where students access prerecorded lectures and classes taught by professionals in a variety of fields, including writing, business, cooking, acting, and more.

As of 2018, MasterClass’s total funding was $130 million.

Lessons are generally 2 to 5 hours and are not interactive for the most part, although some acting classes allow students to interact with one another via Skype.

As of 2019, the company was expanding into politics, economics, and video game design.

As of late 2018, MasterClass offered 50 different classes and more than 1,000 lessons.

Due to the coronavirus and subsequent quarantine, the company began pouring money into television advertising in the Spring of 2020, investing in the idea that people stuck at home might be willing to learn a new craft.

As of early May 2020, the most popular MasterClass was poker, taught by Daniel Negreanu.

Shelly Sun founded BrightStar Care in Chicago, Illinois in 2002. The company provides medical-level in-home care, non-medical home care services, and hospice care. It also runs a medical-staffing segment for clinics, hospitals, and other health care providers who need temporary or permanent staffing.

BrightStar Care currently operates in 39 states and expects to add the remaining 11 states within two years, possibly through acquisition. BrightStar operates franchising within in the home-care sector and is branching out into senior living space, with corporate owning three BrightStar senior living communities.

In 2015, BrightStar made a company plan to have 100 franchised senior living housing developments within 5 years.

During the coronavirus crisis in the early part of 2020, BrightStar Care was one of the few companies that held more than $2 million worth of personal protective equipment.

Mitch Kaplan was studying law when he realized that he loved books and was really only interested in reading more books and meeting the authors than practicing the law that was on the books.

Kaplan opened his own bookstore in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1982. At 25 years of age, he knew nothing about running a business, but he says he quickly learned from his on the job training.

Today, Books and Books has 6 locations around Florida. Kaplan is also responsible for founding the Miami International Book Fair.

History

Most of the locations have an indoor cafe to encourage people to sit and linger over some books, whether they purchase them or not.

The company both founded and sponsors the Miami International Book Faire every November.

Due to the coronavirus, at the end of March 2020, Kaplan states that he had no choice but to close all of the locations until further notice. Books can still be purchased online, however.

The company maintains a corporate office in Coral Gables, Florida.

In 1949, a restauranteur from New York, Gene Harvey, purchased an old frame house on Griffin Road in Denia, Florida, and opened a restaurant he named Tropical Acres.

Although it was out of the way at the time, the restaurant quickly grew a reputation for char-broiled steaks outside over an open-pit barbeque. The idea was so successful that Harvey renamed his restaurant back in New York “Tropical Acres”. For many years, it was the biggest restaurant in Westchester County, New York.

By 1958, Harvey and his uncle owned 4 restaurants/nightclubs in and around the greater Florida area. In 1964, a fire gutted the original restaurant on Griffin road. The idea of rebuilding from scratch was one that Harvey wasn’t sure he wanted to do. A cousin, Sam Stuidale, convinced Harvey that it wouldn’t be as big an undertaking as he imagined and later that same year, the original Griffin Road restaurant opened again, under the management of Stuidale.

History

During the 70s and 80s, all of the other restaurants were sold to other companies or families, other than the original, which remained with Studiale. His children and grandchildren now own and operate the business.

During the coronavirus crisis and quarantine that occurred in March 2020, restaurants everywhere in Florida were attempting to stay afloat by offering take out or delivery service, and Tropical Acres was no exception. The company had an idea, however, and they began to offer Tropical Acres butcher shop, where customers could buy the premium steaks raw in larger quantities and cook them at home.

In May 2020, with a meat shortage on the horizon, Studiale was grateful that the company had extremely large freezers that he hoped would see them through this crisis.

Tropical Acres Steakhouse remains on Griffin Road, where it has been for 71 years, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Mills Company was founded by Stewart C. Mills Sr. in Brainerd, Minnesota, in 1922, with Fleet Farms being founded in 1955 by Stewart C. Mills Jr, and his father.

The company operates a chain of 45 stores that vary in size, with smaller stores offering tools and other equipment, while larger stores sell tools, power tools, automotive goods, garden supplies, home items, hardware, clothing, and even operate gas stations.

In 2016, the company was sold to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, a private equity firm for $1.2 billion.
