Blue Ridge Communications was founded in 1950 by Claude Reinhart in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. The original name of the company was Pencor Services, Inc. Reinhart wanted to improve television reception by placing an antenna on top of Blue Mountain and then installed a pole line. The idea was very successful. In 1955, the company purchased Palmerton Telephone Company.

Today, Blue Ridge Communications provides telephone, cable television, and internet service to more than 170,000 customers. In addition to their telecommunications, the company also offers home security services.

Pencor Services, Inc. owns Pencor Wireless, which operates the company’s cell phone service, and Blue Ridge Communications, which operates as a subsidiary.

In March 2020, the company launched its “Learn from Home” initiative, where low-income families could receive 60 days of internet service free of charge to allow their children access to school programs.

In September 2021, the company announced that it made plans to rebuild its entire 8,000-mile cable network.

In November of 2015, the company made a deal with Walmart to be their exclusive dining outlet at all Walmart Supercenters. All current outlets will be remodeled and rebranded with the Corner Bakery Cafe logo. The transition was expected to begin in August 2016.

Deseret Books was founded in 1919 when two Utah book sellers, Deseret Sunday School Union Bookstore and Deseret News Bookstores, merged into one. The company is the world’s largest Mormon book publisher and operates a chain of bookstores across the Western half of the US. The company is a subsidiary of Deseret Management Corporation.

The company is a for profit corporation, publishing books, Mormon related works of fiction, and musical recordings. Desert Books began publishing bibles aimed directly at the Mormon community in the late 1970’s, with works of fiction being published at the beginning of the 1980’s. Sheri Drew became the first female CEO in 2002 and remains in that position.

Deseret Books has locations in 63 countries, and more than 44 locations in the US, and 3,000 full time employees. Although they are a private company and do not need to disclose their revenue, Hoover estimates that in 2012, annual revenue was $1.2 billion.

The company acquired numerous stores over the years, including Harvey Stores in 1988 and Watson’s in 1998. Peebles was purchased by Stage Stores in 2003 for $167 million in cash and $46.9 million in debts.

Silver Dollar City Corporate Office

Silver Dollar City was founded in 1960 in Branson, Missouri. This theme park surrounds an ancient cave, which the Osage Nation introduced to white settlers. The cave never produced marble or gold, but is a natural wonder. The Herschend family purchased the cave and much of the surrounding land. Over the years, the family reconstructed an 1880’s Ozark frontier town.

Today, Silver Dollar City still belongs to Herschend Family Entertainment Group. This amusement park features, in addtion to the cave, 6 roller coasters, 4 water rides, as well as entertainment and the frontier town itself. The park is situated on 62 acres and receives approximately 2 million visitors each year.

Several episodes of “The Beverly Hillbillies” were filmed at the park, as well as being featured on several television shows, such as “As the World Turns” and Good Morning America.
