Keds Shoes was founded in 1916 when US Rubber decided to consolidate 16 different shoe manufacturers into one company. Although the company’s first name choice was Peds, when they discovered that name was already copyrighted, they switched to Keds. By the early 1920’s, Keds were the only shoes worn by Olympians, college athletes, and sports enthusiasts.

Sneakers, so called because the rubber sole was quiet and allowed people to “sneak” up on others, became extremely popular, especially with teenage and young girls. Keds have been worn and modeled by movie stars, such as Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, and Betty White, to name a few.

Keds is now owned by Wolverine World Wide. Estimated annual revenue in 2015 was $110 billion.

The company offers software products that offer customers an account aggregation service, whereby they can see all of their investments, emails, credit card statements, and more, all on one screen.

The company has headquarters in Redwood City, California, but also has offices in Bangalore, India, and the UK. Evestnet acquired the company in August of 2015 for $660 million.

The company started out offering only on-line products, and began paper products in 2012. Kate Spade and other designers work as partners by offering exclusive designs. Paperless Post uses Crane & Company to create their paper products.

Many famous American use Paperless Post, including President Barack Obama, New York City Mayor  Michael Bloomberg, Khloe Kardashian, and Emma Watson, to name a few.

The company currently has more than 1,000 locations throughout the US and Canada, as well as an active eCommerce site. The parent company has recently begun to expand the chain to operate in larger cities. Maurices offers women’s clothing up to size 26, as well as sleepwear, shoes, and accessories.

In 2011, the company announced that they would offer a special line of clothing from designer Christopher Straub, from the television show Project Runway. Also in 2011, the company was named one of the Top 10 Best Employers in Retail by Forbes.

Due to the coronavirus, many Maurices locations were shut down in early 2020. By June 2020, however, the company hired back nearly all employees who had been laid off.
