Repower by Solar Universe, whose name will change to Repower America, delivers solar power to homeowners through a national network of locally owned and operated franchises and network partners.

The Repower network currently consists of more than 200 partners in 12 states.  In early 2015,  the company began to include complementary smart home components along with solar installation. This bundle includes a solar system smartphone app, temperature monitoring, lighting controls and alerts, all at no cost with every new solar system purchased.

In 2012, Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Solar Universe one of the 50 best new franchise concepts and selected it for the prestigious “Franchise 500,” alongside such industry leaders as Subway, 7-Eleven, and McDonald’s.

The company changed its name to Repower America in September 2017. It also filed for bankruptcy in November 2018.

SolarCity was founded in 2006 by two brothers who were cousins of Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla Motors. The company designs, manufactures, and installs solar panels and solar roof systems for residential, business, and commercial buildings.

The company offers solar cells, installation and mounting hardware, financial products, electrical hardware, monitoring solutions, and related software. The company also sells electricity generated by solar energy systems to customers. In August of 2016, Tesla acquired the company for $2.6 billion. In 2017, the company changed its business model to one where customers would buy the solar systems with cash or via financing.

Many of SolarCity’s panels and solar roof products will now be made at the new Buffalo, New York, plant, starting in 2017. Company headquarters have been relocated to San Mateo, California.
