Avon Corporate Office

Avon can trace its founding back to 1886 when David H. McConnell started a perfume business in lower New York City.  The company’s first sales rep is P.F.E. Albee.

In 1892, the company name was changed to California Perfume Company.

In 1914, the company expands to Canada.

In 1916, the company incorporated in New York.

In 1928, the company begins using the brand Avon for certain products.  In 1939, the company changes its name to Avon Products.

In 1946, the company goes public.

In 1954, the company launches its very successful, “Ding Dong, Avon Calling” ad campaign.

By 1978, there are over 1 million independent sales representatives.

In 1990, the company expands to China.

In 1999, Andrea Jung is named as CEO.

Today, Avon manufactures and sells beauty products in over 140 countries worldwide.  They are the 5th largest beauty company in the world.

Belk Corporate Office

Belk was founded by William Henry Belk in 1888 in Monroe, North Carolina.  The store was originally called New York Racket and then renamed to Belk Brothers.

In 1908, the company headquarters was moved to Charlotte, where it remains today.  A huge flagship store was built where the Bank of America Corporate Center now stands.

In 1921, the Belks begin partnering with the Leggett brothers to open new stores.

In 1952, the company opens its first shopping center in Florida.

In 1956, department store chain Efird is acquired.

In 1988, a new corporate headquarters is constructed in Charlotte.

In 1998, the company consolidates its 112 brands to form Belk Inc.

In 2004, John M. Belk retires as CEO after 50 years of leading the company.  He is replaced by Thomas Belk.

In April of 2015, Belk was sold to a private equity firm, Sycamore Partners. Since then, it has laid off more than 200 persons from the corporate office and slashed jobs across the board at all 300 store locations.

In June 2018, the company was listed as one of the three worst employers to work for in North Carolina.

Today, there are over 300 Belk department stores in the US.

Headquarters remain in Charlotte, North Carolina, at this time.

Regis Corporate Office

Regis began in 1922 when Paul and Florence Kunin opened Kunin Beauty Salon.  Kunin grew quickly as a value priced hair salon in department stores.

In 1958, Myron Kunin purchased the chain and changed the name to Regis.  Myron began to move salons out of department stores and into shopping malls.

In 1996, Regis acquired SuperCuts.

In 2002, the company expanded into Europe with the acquisitions of Vidal Sassoon, Jean Louis David and Saínt Algue.

In 2006, the company announced plans to acquire Sally Beauty Company but the deal fell through at the last minute.

Today, Regis is the largest hair salon chain in the world.  They operate over 11,000 locations worldwide under numerous brands.

Due to the coronavirus in 2020, Regis reported a loss in the first quarter of 2020.

Revlon was founded in 1932 by brothers Charles and Joseph Revson and chemist Charles Lachman.  The company began by developing a unique nail enamel.  The company used pigments instead of dyes and was able to create a unique set of colors.

In 1937, the company began selling their enamels to department stores.  Within 6 years, they were a multimillion dollar company.  By 1940, they had a complete manicure line and also began to produce lipstick.

Revlon went public in 1955.  The stock price tripled in 8 weeks.

During the 1960s, Revson segmented the business following the way General Motors had done it and each segment targeted a specific consumer.  The company also began to sell internationally around this time.

Charles Revson died in 1975 and Michel Bergerac took charge of the company.

As the result of a hostile takeover, Revlon was sold to Pantry Pride in 1985.  The Revlon corporate office is located in New York, New York.
