Safeco was founded in 1923, originally under the General Insurance Company of America. This name is still found on some documents, however, the more commonly used name adopted in the early 1950s is Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America.

Today, Safeco operates as a subsidiary of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. In 2006, the company had annual revenue of $6.29 billion and employed more than 7,000 persons. The company provides property and casualty insurance, sold via a network of independent agents and online sales.

Safeco replaced the former Brooklyn building with a 22-story tower in Seattle, Washington, called Safeco Plaza. A new headquarters was constructed in 2007 on Fourth Avenue, which is the new home of “Safeco Plaza”, the old building is now called the UW Tower.

In August 2023, the company announced that it would drop many homeowners and auto insurance policies across California.

LearnVest was founded in 2009 when current CEO and owner, Alexa Von Tobel, dropped out of Harvard Business School to try her hand at a personal finance app and website specifically designed for women.

Today, LearnVest provides content, tools, support, and financial planning services to help women learn how to better manage their finances. The website educates its subscribers  about money, including lifestyle tips for making a reasonable budget and sticking to it. In addition, it covers topics ranging from tracking spending to paying down student loans and planning wallet friendly outings, even plotting strategies when asking for a raise.

Alex Von Tobel is also the author of a book, Financially Fearless, and regularly hosts live events, as well as book tours, across the US.
