The Tribune Media Company was founded in 1847 as The Tribune Company, which was founded to publish the Chicago Daily Tribune. The original newspaper was printed on a hand press and had a starting run of 400 copies.

Joseph Medill acquired an interest in the company in 1855 and gained full ownership in 1874. His two grandsons assumed leadership in 1911.
