While working at a company he founded but no longer owned, James Dyson reinvented the vacuum cleaner in 1979. When he suggested that the company could use his idea, Dyson was fired. With startup money from friend Jeremy Fry, Dyson worked on his vacuum until he was satisfied that he had created the best vacuum in the United Kingdom, if not the world.

The Dyson company was established in 1991. Even though marketing told Dyson that the public wouldn’t like to see a transparent canister to hold the dust and debris, Dyson designed it anyway. This item became one of the company’s main selling points and has been copied by numerous other designers.

Dyson vacuum yellow Until 2002, products were made in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, UK.  Production of the popular vacuum was moved first to Malaysia, then to Singapore.

Today, the company is a leading manufacturer of vacuums, hand dryers, air purifiers, hair dryers, bladeless fans, and heaters.

Dyson vacuum colors Dyson announced in 2018 that he had plans to design and manufacture an electric vehicle that would be available for sale in 2020, hiring former BMW and Infiniti CEO Roland Krueger to head up the project. He later announced that he was moving headquarters from the UK to Malaysia due to problems with bureaucracy in the UK and not because of Brexit.

Company headquarters for the North American division of Dyson is located in Chicago, Illinois.

Shark Vacuum, also known as Shark Ninja, actually got its start about 100 years ago in Europe making sewing machines. The business expanded to Canada, where 3rd generation CEO Mark Rosenweig, decided to make an offshoot of the company and move it to Massachusetts. Rosenweig developed a unique type of vacuum cleaner, as well as a blender called The Ninja in 2003.

Shark vacuum The company created a different type of easy to use, lightweight vacuum called The Shark. This vacuum quickly became so popular that within 5 years, it outsold the previous #1 selling vacuum made by Dyson.

It was rumored in 2017 that the company was up for sale and later that same year, CDH Funding, a private equity firm, invested $1 billion in the company for a significant equity interest.

Shark Robot In early 2018, the company introduced their robotic vacuum to compete with company’s such as Roomba. In the May 2018 edition of New York Magazine, the Shark Ion robotic vacuum was listed as the best such vacuum for picking up pet hair.

In August 2020, Amazon customers stated that the Shark vaccum beat Dyson’s hands down.

The corporate office for Shark is currently found in Needham, Massachusetts.
