NV Energy Corporate Office

NV Energy was created through the merger of Northern Nevada’s Sierra Pacific Power and Las Vegas’ Nevada Power in 1989.

Sierra Pacific Power had its roots in the gold rush of 1850’s. Nevada Power was formed in 1906 as the Consolidated Power and Telephone Company of Nevada.

The merger of the two companies created a utility company with a survey territory of 44,000 square miles – almost all of Nevada’s populated area.

Today NV Energy has 1.3 million electricity customers and 155,000 natural gas customers. The company has a generating capacity of 24,000 MW, which is sold to wholesale customers in the Western United States.

In 2013 Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, acquired NV Energy and took it private.

In 1983 Pioneer Corporation spun off its natural gas distribution division, Energas. In 1988 Energas changed its name to Atmos Energy Corporation and its shares began trading publicly.

Today Atmos Energy is the largest gas-only utility company in the US. The company distributes natural gas to more than 3 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in eight Midwestern and Southern states.

Subsidiary Atmos Energy Marketing sells natural gas to 1,000 industrial and utility customers in 22 states.

UGI Corporation was founded in 1882 as United Gas Improvement Co., a holding company for utility subsidiaries.

Today UGI’s largest subsidiary is AmeriGas Partners, one of the two largest propane marketers in the U.S. The company’s utility subsidiary, UGI Utiities, distributes electricity to 62,000 customers and gas to 575,000 customers in Pennsylvania.

The company also offers propane distribution in Asia and Europe, electricity generation and energy services, and energy marketing.

The company was successful, and in 1910 Foote teamed up with new investors to create Consumers Power Co.

In 1931 the company installed a 40-mile pipeline to natural gas wells, replacing manufactured gas made from heating coal.

In 1962 Consumers Power built Big Rock Point, Michigan’s first nuclear power facility and the fifth in the United States.
