In 1983 Pioneer Corporation spun off its natural gas distribution division, Energas. In 1988 Energas changed its name to Atmos Energy Corporation and its shares began trading publicly.
Today Atmos Energy is the largest gas-only utility company in the US. The company distributes natural gas to more than 3 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in eight Midwestern and Southern states.
Subsidiary Atmos Energy Marketing sells natural gas to 1,000 industrial and utility customers in 22 states.
Atmos Energy trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ATO, is #634 in the Fortune 1000, has 4,720 employees, and had $4.85 billion in revenue in 2013.
