Smart and Final can trace its roots back to 1871 in Los Angeles, California. At that time, Los Angeles was a small ranching town. Three friends, Herman Hellman, Jacob Haas and Bernard Cohn, decided to open a grocery store to service the surrounding farms and ranches.
Today, Smart and Final is the oldest, and one of the largest, warehouse style supermarkets in the Western US. The company employs more than 10,000 persons and operates in 7 states. The company has acquired numerous competitors over the years, including Cash & Carry, Henry’s Farmers Markets, Sun Harvest, and in 2011, Sprouts Markets.
In 2014, the company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol: SNF.
The company operates more than 250 locations across the US and 15 in Mexico under the name Calimax.
