Originally created as a free app for IOS systems only, the program proved so popular that a platform for Android phones was released in 2012. The company had more than 10 million subscribers in their first year and as of April of 2017, more than 375 million subscribers.
In 2012, Facebook acquired the company for $1 billion in cash and stocks. The company has come under fire recently for what is perceived as censorship, as well as illegal or improper uploads from some users. Company headquarters are still located in San Francisco, California.
The company announced in May 2019 that millions of Instagram “influencers” had their private contact data exposed by hackers.
