While Ooshma Garg was still in college at Stanford, she created her first startup company, Anapata, which matched students seeking jobs with employers. During this time, Garg says that she relied on fast food, take out food, and other unhealthy meal choices due to a lack of time to make healthy, home-cooked meals.

Garg decided to create a new startup that would fill this niche. Trying a delivery service of pre-made meals did not appeal to her since the meals were usually cold and unappealing. She then tried a business model similar to Blue Apron, where clients assembled the meals themselves but also found that this was nearly as time-consuming as making them from scratch.

Gooble was founded. Garg took the middle of the road approach. Ingredients for meals are measured, chopped, and ready to assemble. Clients only need to mix ingredients as required and cook them. Gobble states that meals take a maximum of 15 minutes to go from fridge to table.

Gobble’s subscription service does cost more than some others, but for subscribers, time is more important than cost. Most reviewers found Gobble superior to other services.

Brett Podolsky’s Rottweiler, Jada, had problems digesting store-bought dog food. After consulting with a veterinarian, he and friend Jonathan Regev worked to find a home-made recipe that would not only help Jada’s stomach problems but that Jada would want to eat. The Farmer’s Dog was born.

The company operates a subscription dog-food delivery service. With facilities in every state, The Farmer’s Dog can delivery in all 50 states. The company boasts that its food uses real, fresh ingredients, unlike processed supermarket food which often uses powdered or dried by-products.

Each dog has their own customized menu based on breed, sex, activity level, age, and other factors. Most offer a base of chicken, turkey, or beef, along with vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and chickpeas, as well as added supplements (if necessary) such as fish oil.

In an interview, Boerner says the idea to start her own business came at an opportune time since she was fired from her PR job just two months later.

Roman was founded in 2017 by Zachariah Reitano, Saman Rahmanian, and Rob Schutz after Reitano ‘s ED issues could not be easily addressed without several doctor’s visits.

Founded in 2012, friends Matt Salzberg, Ilia Papas, and Matt Wadiak packed the first boxes and delivered them from a commercial kitchen. Within one year, the company launched larger operations, first with a launching site in California, and later adding 3 additional sites. By 2015, Blue Apron was able to serve every state in the continental US.

The company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol APRN in June of 2017. Since that time, Wall Street has cut the company’s stock price in half, which prompted Blue Apron to cut their staff by 6%.
