CVS was founded in Lowell, Massachusetts, by the Goldstein brothers in 1963.  By 1964, there were 17 CVS stores selling primarily health and beauty items.

In 1967, CVS opened its first stores with pharmacy departments in Rhode Island.  In 1969, CVS was sold to the Melville Corporation.

History

By 1970, there were 100 CVS stores in the New England and Northeastern US.  In 1972, the chain acquired Clinton Drug and Discount, which nearly doubled the size of the chain.

In 1988, the 750th location was opened.  In 1990, the chain acquired the 500 store chain Peoples Drug.  The stores were converted to CVS branding in 1994.

In 2004, CVS acquired Eckerd Drug, a 1200+ store chain.

The acronym CVS was said to originally stand for Consumer Value Stores.  Former CEO Thomas Ryan says it stands for Convenience, Value, and Service.

CVS pharmacy inside store CVS has filed lawsuits in 2019 trying to prevent former employees and executives from working for a subsidiary of Amazon, PillPack. CVS and other pharmacies appear to have concerns that Amazon will, in the near future, deal directly with pharmaceutical companies and health insurers, cutting prescription drug prices dramatically.

In April 2019, the company instated a policy where they would only offer a maximum of 3 test strips for diabetics, regardless of doctor’s orders, the number of strips in a prescription, the amount covered by insurance, or patient circumstances.

In July 2018, CVS stated they planned to roll out a program called RX Savings Finder, designed to show customers that CVS has the lowest prices.

CVS announced that they would close a record 900 locations across the US starting in January 2022.

CVS currently operates over 9,800 pharmacies in the US.  The CVS corporate office is located in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

FB 1

History

Facebook began as a simple “fun” project by a then Sophmore at Harvard University by the name of Mark Zuckerberg in 2003. Writing a program called FaceMash, Zuckerberg intended the program to be a fun “Hot or Not” game, posting the pictures of two Harvard students and letting other students vote which was the more attractive.

Harvard administrators did not see the humor and not only shut down the site, but threatened to expel Zuckerberg. Charges were dropped but Zuckerberg persisted and created a student directory, which featured basic info and a photograph. Harvard liked the idea and stated that they would “get around to it”. Zuckerberg said he didn’t want to wait, that he could do it better and complete the site in about a week. Originally calling his product TheFacebook, it was put into action February 4, 2004.

Although the original Facebook was intended only for Harvard students, it was clear this was going to become much larger. Within 30 days, more than half of all Harvard students were registered. By March of 2004, Facebook had expanded to other colleges, such as Princeton and Yale. Later the company opened to all Ivy League schools and by the end of the year, Facebook was admitting just about every college campus.

The company moved to its own headquarters in Palo Alto, California. With some seed money from Paypal founder Peter Thiel, the company paid about $200,000 for the use of the Facebook.Com address, dropping the word “the” from the name.

In 2005, the site began to allow high school students to register.  In 2006, the site was opened up to everyone 13 and older with a valid email address. The company also allowed business pages to advertise and promote their products and services that same year.

In 2007, Microsoft purchased a 1.6% stake in Facebook.

In 2008, Facebook opened their international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.

In 2009, the company was cash flow positive for the first time.

For the week ending March 31, 2010, more people visited Facebook than Google for the first time.

In early 2011, the company moved their headquarters to Menlo Park, California. It was reported at this time that Facebook was dropping approximately 20,000 suspicious profiles each day to improve their cybersecurity measures.  FB 5

On May 17, 2012, the company went public on the NASDAQ with stock symbol FB. The company makes most of its money via advertising that is shown in between posts on users timelines.

In 2013, the company introduced clickable Hashtags (#) so users could follow a trend or news story more easily. FB 4

Facebook currently has over 200 billion users monthly as of 2017, and 900 million users worldwide. In recent years, the company has received criticism for the number of fake news sites, hate speech, and graphic violence allowed on site. The company has responded with a feedback/reporting system that many people feel is unfairly put into practice.  The Facebook corporate office is located in Menlo Park, California.

sears 6

In 1925, the first retail location was opened in Chicago, Illinois.

The company built many stand-alone stores from 1925 into the 1950s.  Their strategy then changed during the 60s and 70s from independent stores to building stores inside shopping malls.sears 2

In 2005, Sears was purchased by Kmart and the Sears Holding Group was formed.

Formerly the #1 retailer in the US, as of 2017, Sears is now the 23rd largest retailer in the United States overall. In 2016, the company had annual revenue of $13.8 billion.

In 1974, the company completed the 110-story Sears Tower in Chicago, which became the world’s tallest building at the time.  Sears moved to the new Prairie Stone Business Park in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

In late 2016 and early 2017, some significant steps were taken by CEO Edward Lampert in an attempt to make the company solvent. Lampert sold the Craftsman brand to Stanley Black & Decker for approximately $900 million. During this same period, the company announced that it would close 150 stores (109 Kmart and 41 Sears outlets), in an attempt to cut its losses after a decline in sales of 12 to 13 percent during the holiday shopping season and the largest quarterly loss since 2013.

In October of 2017, Sears and Whirlpool ended their 101-year agreement which allowed Sears and Kmart stores to sell Whirlpool appliances. The companies were unable to come to an agreement on pricing issues.

The company currently operates over 2200 stores in the US and employs more than 89,000 persons.  The Sears corporate office is located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

In June 2018, Sears announced that they would be closing 48 Sears locations and 15 Kmart stores. The company hoped that this would help them be able to repay their multi-million dollar debt.

In December 2020, online site Best Life listed Sears as the #1 company when it came to the worst in customer service.

The company continues to suffer from poor sales and a shattered reputation. In November 2021, the last Sears location in the state of Illinois closed its doors and the only location in Hawaii also shut down.
