Rue 21 was originally known as Pennsylvania Fashions Inc.  Pennsylvania Fashions Inc filed for bankruptcy in 2002.  The 250 store chain was purchased by Saunders Karp & Megrue and renamed to Rue 21.

In 2009, the company opened its 500th location and went public.

In 2011, the company announced it would double the size of its distribution center in Weirton, West Virginia.

History

By 2012, there were 800 stores.

In 2013, the 900th store was opened.

Today, there are 1,213 Rue 21 stores in 48 US states.  The company is a discount retailer of young adult clothing and accessories.

Budget Rent A Car was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1958 by Morris Mirkin.  The original fleet consisted of 10 vehicles.  The company got the name budget by undercutting competitors rates.

In 1960, the company headquarters moved to Chicago, Illinois and the company began to expand through franchising.

In 1986, the company was purchased in a leveraged buyout by Gibbons, Green and van Amerongen.  The company went public in 1987.

In 1997, Budget was purchased by Team Rental Group, its largest franchisee and the stock was listed on the NYSE.  The company was renamed to Budget Group.  budget 4

In 2002, the company was purchased by the Cendant Corporation, who owned Avis.  In 2006, the company separated into four division and Budget became the Avis Budget Group. The company is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol: CAR.

A Forbes article in March 2018 states that Budget has seen a steady decline in profits over the past decade.

Today, there are over 3,000 Budget Rent A Car locations in 120 countries worldwide.

Benihana was founded in 1964 in New York City by Rocky H. Aoki.  The first restaurant was on W 56th Street.

The chain struggled until received a rave review from the New York Herald in 1965.

In 1968, the first restaurant opened outside of New York, in Chicago.

In 1982, the Benihana National Corporation went public.

By 1997, there were 47 restaurants.

In 1999, the company acquired Haru Sushi.

In 2002, the company acquired RA Sushi.

In 2007, the 100th restaurant was opened.

In 2008, founder Rocky Aoki died.

In 2012, the chain was acquired by Angelo Gordon & Company and taken private.

Today, Benihana operates nearly 120 Japanese cuisine restaurants worldwide.  The chain also operates both Haru and RA sushi restaurants.

Save-A-Lot began in 1977 with single store in Cahokia, Illinois.  The chain was founded by Bill Moran who used the idea of limited selection to compete against the mega chains.

By 1980, there were 52 stores.

In 1987, the company was purchased by Wetterau Inc.

History

In 1993, Wetterau and Save-A-Lot were acquired by Supervalu Inc.

In 2002, the company acquired the Deal$ chain.  In 2006, Deal$ was sold to Dollar Tree.

In 2006, founder Bill Moran retires.

By 2009, there were 1200 locations.

Today, Save-A-Lot is a wholly owned subsidiary of SuperValu.  There are more than 1300 stores nationwide.

Suddenlink was started in 2003 after Classic Communications bankruptcy.  Classic was renamed to Cebridge Connections.

In 2006, Cebridge renamed itself to Suddenlink after completing acquisitions from Cox and Charter Communications.

History

In 2006 and 2007, the company completed a large nationwide backbone project.

In 2010, the company acquired Windjammer Cable.  They also began to partner with TiVo to offer Premiere DVRs.

In 2011, the company began to offer HBO GO and MAX GO programming.

In 2012, the company was the first in the US to offer TiVo Stream.

In 2013, the company was the first to offer the TiVo Mini.

Suddenlink and Altice Logos

Today, Suddenlink is the 6th largest cable broadband provider in the US.  They currently provide service to over 1.5 million subscribers.

The company began offering free family channels in April 2020, such as Hallmark channels, the DIY Channel, the Cooking channel, and many more due to the number of people being quarantined because of the COVID-19 crisis.

In 2014, the company dropped popular Viacom channels because they felt the channels were too costly. Some Viacom channels returned to subscribers line up in August of 2017.

While Forbes lists the company as #331 on its list of America’s Best Employers, customer complaints are extensive.

When hurricane Laura struck Southwest Louisiana in August 2020, Suddenlink CEO stated that they did not expect to fully restore service until mid-November. 

The company operates as a subsidiary of Altice USA, inc.

In 2014, the company had annual revenue of $2.33 billion.
