Vasilios and Aphrodite Haseotes bought a one-cow dairy farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island in 1939.

They opened a dairy store in Bellingham, Massachusetts in 1958 and their first convenience store in 1962. This was the first ever convenience store in the Northeastern United States.

In 1986 Cumberland Farms bought all of Gulf Oil’s gas stations as well as the rights to the trademark in the Northeast.

History

Today, Cumberland Farms is #37 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies, has over 6,000 employees, has 600 stores and gas stations in 11 states, mostly in the Northeast and Florida, and had $8.02 billion in revenue in 2011.

Chrysler LLC is one of the “Big Three” American automobile manufacturers. It is a consolidated subsidiary of Fiat, which is a multinational automaker. Chrysler Group LLC is the twelfth biggest automaker by production in the world.

Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation in 1925, and in 1928 it expanded to include the Dodge, Fargo, Plymouth, and DeSoto brands.

In the 1970s Chrysler was almost in bankruptcy due to factors including the 1973 oil crisis. The company returned to profitability in the 1980s.

History

In 1987 American Motor Company was acquired by Chrysler, including the Jeep brand.

In 1998 Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz AG, forming the new company DaimlerChrysler. This move proved unpopular with investors and Chrysler was sold to Cerberus Capital Management in 2007, and renamed Chrysler Group LLC.

Chrysler was hit hard by the crisis of 2008 and received loans of billions of dollars from the U.S. government to prevent them from going under.

Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2009.  It emerged from bankruptcy with Fiat, the U.S. government, the Canadian government, and the United Auto Workers pension fund as principal owners. Fiat gradually acquired shares from other stakeholders and now has majority ownership.

Today Chrysler has over 65,000 employees and had $65.78 billion in revenue in 2012.

Oracle was founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison, Ed Oates and Bob Miner as Software Development Laboratories.

In 1978, Oracle Version 1 is completed.

In 1979, the company changes its name to Relational Software Inc.

History

In 1982, the company changes its name to Oracle Systems Corporation.

In 1984, Oracle Version 4 is released and is ported to run on MS-DOS.

In 1986, the company goes public.

In 1994, the company acquires DEC Rdb.

In 2000, the OracleMobile subsidiary is launched.

In 2004, PeopleSoft is acquired.

In 2010, the company acquires Sun Microsystems.  The company is also indicted for fraud by the US Department of Justice.

Today, Oracle is one of the largest enterprise software firms in the world.  The company specializes in relational database software.

Humana

Humana was founded in 1961 by David Jones and Wendell Cherry as Extendicare.  The company was originally a nursing home company.

In 1972, the company began investing in hospitals and eventually become the largest hospital company in the world.

History

In 1974, the company name was changed to Humana Inc.

In 1978, the company acquired American Medicorp Inc.  This acquisition doubled the size of the company.

In the 1980s, the company began to offer health insurance.

In 1993, the hospital division of the company was spun off as Galen Health Care.

In 2006, the company launched RightSource, a mail-order pharmacy business.

Today, Humana is one of the largest health insurance providers in the US.  The company currently serves over 11 million customers.

In September 2022, Morgan Stanley stated that Humana could be the top retail Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan. 

In October 2022, the company announced that it would donate $13 million to improve mental health services for veterans, children, and the elderly. 

Humana maintains a corporate office in Louisville, Kentucky.

Goldman Sachs was founded in 1869 by Marcus Goldman.

In 1882, Goldman’s son-in-law, Samuel Sachs, joined the business.

In 1885, Goldman’s son, Henry, and another son-in-law joined the business and the name Goldman, Sachs & Company was adopted.

History

In 1896, the company is listed on the NYSE.

In 1906, the company has an IPO.

In 1929, the Goldman Sachs Trading Corporation fails after the stock market crash.  This failure hurts the firm’s reputation.

In 1956, the firm manages the IPO for Ford Motor Company.

In 1981, the firm acquires J. Aron & Company.

In 1999, the company goes public and offers an IPO under the leadership of Henry Paulson, Jr.  Paulson would go on to become Secretary of the US Treasury.

Today, Goldman Sachs is one of the largest investment banks in the world.  The firm engages in investment banking, securities trading and other financial services.
