Michael’s Stores Corporate Office

Michael's Stores, Inc.

Michael Dupey founded Michael’s when he converted one of his father’s Ben Franklin stores into an arts and crafts store in 1973. This first store became a part of Dupey Enterprises, Inc., the Dupey family business run by Michael’s father, Jim Dupey, and the predecessor to Michael’s Stores, Inc.

History

In 1983 Micheal’s 11 stores were acquired by Peoples Restaurants, and one year later was spun-off as a publicly traded company, with shares trading on the NASDAQ.

After the IPO, Michael’s quickly acquired two chains of arts and crafts stores, making Michael’s national.

During the 1990’s Michael’s stuck to its goal of rapid expansion throughout the United States, and achieved a growth rate of 15%.

In 2006 two private equity groups, Bain Capital and Blackstone Group, purchased the company for $6 billion.

Craft stores have tried to stay open during the coronavirus quarantine periods, including Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnn’s Fabrics.

Today there are 1,040 Michael’s stores in 49 U.S. states and Canada. The company owns and operates the Aaron Brothers chain, with 140 stores. Michael’s produces ten brands: Recollections, Studio Decor, Bead Landing, Creatology, Ashland, Celebrate It, Art Minds, Artist’s Loft, Craft Smart, and Loops & Threads. Michael’s has 44,000 employees and had $5.072 billion in revenue in 2019.

Michael’s CEO has decided to begin turning away from craft items and aim for more DIYer projects.

Michael’s maintains its corporate office in Irving, Texas.

Neiman Marcus Corporate Office

Neiman Marcus Group

NM1

Herbert Marcus Sr. along with his sister, Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband, A.L. Neiman, had $25,000 to invest from a successful sales-promotion firm they had built in 1907. These business partners had two choices: purchase the rights to a new, unknown sugary soda or return to their hometown and start a new retail store.

History

They rejected the possible investment in the fledgeling Coca-Cola Company and chose to start a retail business in Dallas instead.

The Neiman Marcus store was stocked with high-quality clothing not commonly found in Texas, mostly bought by Carrie in New York. Within weeks everything was sold out.NM2

In 1914 a fire destroyed the Neiman Marcus store and all of its inventory. When the company reopened it had increased product selection to include lingerie and children’s clothing.

In 1950 Neiman Marcus opened a second location, also in Dallas, and expanded to Houston in 1957. A portrait studio operated by Gittings in the late 1950’s and 1960’s, brought high profile clients into the store to have their portraits done. Stars such as Howard Hughes, Wyatt Cooper, Gloria Vanderbilt, and son Anderson Cooper, now of CNN fame.

Throughout the 1970’s the company opened new stores in Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and St. Louis. After the death of Stanley Marcus in 2002, the store has changed hands several times, but still retains its original name. The company is now under the shared ownership of Ares Management and CPP Investment Board. NM3

Today Neiman Marcus has 41 stores nationwide, owns Bergdorf-Goodman department stores, and operates a direct marketing division, Neiman Marcus Direct. Neiman Marcus has over 15,000 employees and had $4.34 billion in revenue in 2012.

John L. Morris began Bass Pro Shops when he started a fishing section in the back of his father’s Brown Derby liquor store in Missouri in 1971. This small department sold homemade bait and worms.

History

The homemade bait proved popular with tourists and people began to inquire about how they could order them once they returned home. Thus began the Bass Pro Shops catalog in 1974. bass 5

In 1975 the company established American Rod and Gun (ARG) as a separate wholesale entity.

Today Bass Pro shops operate 56 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The stores carry a number of house brands, including Ascend, Bass Pro Shops, Bob Timberlake, Johnny Morris Reels, Natural Reflections, Offshore Angler, Redhead, Uncle Buck’s, White River, Worldwide Sportsman, XPS, and XTS.

Bass Pro Shops is a privately-held retailer of camping, fishing, and hunting gear and other related outdoor recreation equipment. The company’s largest stores are operated under the name Outdoor World. Bass Pro Shops is #93 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies and had $4.58 billion in revenue in 2016.

It was rumored in 2015 that the company would buy out competitor Cabela’s.

bass 4

In October of 2016, it was announced that Bass Pro Shops would acquire Cabela’s for $5.5 billion. This will nearly double the number of stores to 184 locations, as well as increasing the number of employees from 20,000 to 39,000.  This is the 5th largest merger in US history and was so complicated that the companies hired no less than 13 banks and law firms to ensure the deal went smoothly.

In mid-2018, Forbes stated that the company is the #2 hottest retailer in America.

While it is unknown at this time if Cabela’s will be rebranded as Bass Pro Shops, company officials have stated that Cabela’s credit cards would be honored at Bass Pro Shops stores.bass 7
