7-Eleven, Inc.

7 Eleven was founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, when John Jefferson Green, an employee of the Southland Ice Company, began selling milk, eggs, and bread, from an improvised storefront in front of one of the company’s ice houses.

The manager of the ice plant, Joe C. Thompson, recognized the potential of this idea as the ice preserved the items and allowed people to buy these goods close to home. He eventually bought the Southland Ice Company and opened several stores selling convenience items.

History

In 1946 the name of the company was changed to 7 Eleven to reflect the stores’ new opening hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

In 1952 the company opened its’ 100th store.

In 1964 7 Eleven began implementing 24-hour schedules in its stores.

After a management buyout in 1987 and several changes in ownership, the company’s largest franchisee Ito-Yokado rescued the company from bankruptcy in 1998 and bought it outright in 2005.

In mid-2018, the company changed their contract terms with franchisors, forcing them to carry certain products and charging set prices for them. This has created tension as many franchisors are unhappy with the new terms.

Today 7 Eleven is the world’s largest operator, franchisor, and licensor of convenience stores, with more than 50,000 outlets. 7 Eleven operates in Japan, the United States, Thailand, Indonesia, Canada, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Cinemark Theatres was founded in 1984 by Lee Roy Mitchell as a chain of movie theaters in California, Texas, and Utah.

Through acquisitions the company became the third-largest chain of movie theaters in the United States.

In 2006 Cinemark purchased Century Theatres, adding over 80 theaters.

History

In 2009 the company purchased four theaters from Muvico Theaters.

In 2012 Cinemark acquired Rave Cinemas, a chain with 32 theaters in 12 states, representing almost 500 screens.

Today Cinemark has 334 theaters and 4,457 screens in 40 states. The company also operates in Latin America with 148 theaters and 1,106 screens in 12 countries.

Cinemark operates movie theaters under the brands Cinemark, Century Theatres, Tinseltown USA, CineArts, and Rave Cinemas.

The company trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CNK, is a member of the S&P 400, is #818 on the Fortune 1000, has 6,253 employees, and had $2.68 billion in revenue in 2013.

Lifetime Products

Lifetime Products manufactures polyethylene folding chairs, tables, picnic tables, and home basketball equipment. The company also manufactures large consumer products including sheds, trailers, kayaks, paddleboards, and lawn and garden items.

Lifetime Products was founded when Barry Mower made a sturdy basketball pole for himself and began selling them through a classified ad. Soon after, he opened a small sporting-goods store which he named Lifetime Products in 1986. The name means products that are built to last a lifetime.

In 1995 the company invented the first blow-molded picnic table in 1995. More blow-molded items followed.

History

In 2010 Lifetime Products acquired Dragonfly Innovation Corp, a producer of blow-molded kayaks. The kayaks are popular because they are designed not to flip over.

Today the company has the largest single-point blow molded plastics facility in North America. The company’s products are available in more than 70 countries worldwide. In the United States products are available in Sports Authority, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Modell’s, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Costco, BJ’s, Home Depot, Lowe’s and more.

Guess Clothing was founded by brothers Paul and Maurice Marciano when they opened their first store in Beverly Hills in 1981. The store was an upscale boutique.

Guess soon began advertising and the company’s iconic black and white ads were developed.

The company originally produced and sold jeans for women, but men’s jeans were added in 1983.

History

In 1984 Guess watches were introduced. They continue to be popular today. Over the years the line of watches has been joined by other accessories lines.

After a lawsuit brought by the Department of Labor (DOL) in 1992 about the company’s failure to pay their workers minimum wage, Guess’s image was damaged and the company faced a severe downturn in sales.

In the 2000’s the company recovered and started to promote a different look and style. Guess ‘ clothing collection includes jeans, pants, skirts, dresses, shorts, blouses, jackets, knitwear, and intimate apparel.

Today Guess owns and operate 500 retail stores in the United States and Canada and 346 in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Its lincencees and distributors operate another 866 stores outside of the U.S. and Canada.

Guess is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol GES, is a member of the S&P 400, is #778 on the Fortune 1000, has 14,600 employees, and had $2.57 billion in revenue in 2013.

Pier 1 Imports’ first store opened in San Mateo, California in 1962. The new store catered to “hippy baby boomers” and featured love beads and incense.

Four years later, Pier 1 had grown to 16 locations.

History

Pier 1 first went public on the American Stock Exchange in 1960 and later joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. That year Pier 1 had 123 stores and had expanded internationally to Australia and Europe.

Today Pier 1 has more than 1,000 stores under the name Pier 1 Imports in United States, Canada and Mexico. The stores sell imported decorative home furnishings, decorative accents, seasonal items, and gifts. Pier 1 sells more then 6,000 items imported from more than 50 countries.

Pier 1 is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PIR, has 3,700 employees, and had $1.81 billion in revenue in 2013.

In February 2020, the company announced that it was closing up to 450 locations.

Pier One filed for bankruptcy earlier in February and is trying to find a buyer or consolidate their debt.

In April 2020, the company received an offer to purchase the corporation, but it would need to close nearly 800 locations. It is unknown at this time if the company has accepted the offer.

Pier One maintains their corporate office in Fort Worth, Texas.
