The Motley Fool was founded in 1993 by brothers Tom and David Gardner. The same comes from a Shakespeare play where the Court Jester was the only person who could tell the truth to the Duke under the guise of comedy.

In 1994, The Motley Fool published a series of messages online promoting a nonexistent sewage-disposal company. The messages, which were an April Fool’s joke designed to teach a lesson about penny stock investing, garnered widespread attention, including an article in the Wall Street Journal.

In 2002, the company switched to a subscription-based online model which offered investment advice and discussion, the first of its kind.

In August 2018, the company launched a personal-finance sub-brand called The Ascent to provide personal finance product reviews and free educational resources.

In 2019, the company launched a cell phone app called Investor Island. Investor Island is a real-time strategy board game based on investing.

Vudu was founded by Tony Miranz and Alain Rossmann. The Vudu Box had been secretly in development since 2004, but in April 2007, The New York Times revealed that Vudu had signed deals with several movie studios and independent distributors to deliver access to nearly 5,000 films.

Vudu is a streaming service and digital media store that offers video rentals on-demand, digital purchase of films, and streaming service where purchased videos can be watched over and over again.

The service initially used a digital box, similar to Roku, but the company eventually abandoned the box and focused on using third-party apps, such as television sets and Blu-Ray disc players.

History

Walmart purchased the company in 2010 and in 2020, Walmart sold Vudu to Fandango for an undisclosed amount.

In October 2018, Vudu partnered with MGM Television to acquire original programming for Movies on Us, with a focus on “family-friendly, advertiser-friendly content” derived from existing MGM properties.

As of June 2019, Vudu’s selection contains over 24,000 titles in its catalog and over 8,000 television shows. The company offers many popular and even recently released movies, such as No Time to Die in late 2021.

In 2014, the company was fined just over half a million dollars by the FTC for, among other things, failing to maintain reasonable procedures to assure the maximum possible accuracy of the reports.

The company purchased its current domain, Investing.com, for $2.45 million at the end of 2012. It was one of the most expensive domain name purchases ever made.

The company launched its Android cell phone app in September 2013 and the IOS app for Apple devices in 2014.

History

According to Alexa, in February 2021, it was ranked as the 194th most popular website in the world.

The company has four offices worldwide and 300 employees (as of 2019) and is composed of 33 editions in 24 languages.

JoinSmarty also does comparison shopping and alerts you if a lower price is found elsewhere on an item that you purchased within the last 30 days since many retailers will honor the lower price.

History

The company recently introduced a subscription-based service called SmartyPlus. This service not only offers everything JoinSmarty does, but it also offers free delivery, doubles the cash-back offered by many stores or credit cards, as well as automates and simplifies the process of obtaining credits from Amazon if packages are delayed.

The Better Business Bureau shows Smarty only has 1.5 stars but it is approved by the BBB with a B+ rating at this time.
