Ecolab was founded in 1923 by Merritt J. Osborn as Economics Laboratory. The company’s first product, a hotel carpet cleaner, was not a success.

The company’s second product was a soap for hotel dish washing machines called SOILAX. This soap was the best on the market and sales reached $5.4 million by the end of the 1940’s.
