The Manitowoc Company was founded by Carles West and Elias Gunnell in 1902 as a shipbuilding and ship repair company named Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company.

In 1920 the company expanded to the lattice-boom crane business and into commercial refrigeration after World War II.

During World War II Manitowoc  built 28 submarines for the U.S. Navy.

History

Today the company manufactures lifting equipment such as boom trucks, tower cranes, and mobile telescopic cranes for the construction, mining, petrochemical, utilities, and energy industries.

The Foodservice segment supplies ice-making, beverage dispensing, food prep, and heating equipment to restaurants, health care facilities, and hotels.

The Manitowoc Company trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MTW, is #600 in the Fortune 1000, has 13,400 employees, and had $3.95 billion in revenue in 2013.
