The Del Monte name was first used in the 1880’s for premium coffee prepared for the prestigious Hotel Del Monte in California. In 1892 the company expanded and Del Monte was chosen as the brand name for its new line of canned peaches.

In 1892 the California Fruit Canners Association (CFCA) formed with the merger of 18 West Coast canning companies, including the Del Monte brand. By the 1920’s CFCA, now named California Packing Corporation, operated more than 60 canneries all over the U.S. as well as a Pineapple farm in Hawaii.

Around the time of WWII, the company began purchasing facilities overseas. At this time the company changed its name to Del Monte Corporation.

History

Today the company is one of the largest producers and distributors of canned fruits and vegetables in the United States and includes the brands Del Monte, Contadina, and College Inn. Pet food brands include Meow Mix, 9Lives, and Milk-Bone.

Del Monte is currently owned by a group of private investors led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. The company is #113 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies, has 7,600 employees, and had $3.82 billion in revenue in 2013.

The J. M. Smucker Company was founded in 1897 by Jerome Monroe Smucker when he began selling apple butter out of the back of a wagon on his farm in Orville, Ohio.

The company was incorporated in 1921. Smucker’s is a family company and has been family-run for four generations.

Today Smucker’s is best known for manufacturing the Smucker’s brand fruit spread. The company also manufactures Jif brand peanut butter, Folger’s Coffee, which is the #1 selling brand of coffee in the U.S., Cafe Bustelo espresso, Hungry Jack and Pillsbury baking mixes and frosting, Eagle canned milk, Crisco shortening, and Dunkin’ Donuts premium coffee.

Forest Laboratories was founded in 1956 as a small laboratory service company, helping pharmaceutical companies to create new drugs.

In 1977 the company changed its focus to marketing new and generic drugs, as the then-CEO Howard Solomon wanted to explore this more profitable side of the business.

One notable acquisition was Aerobid, and asthma drug, in 1986. At the time of purchase Aerobid had total sales of $2.3 million. By 1991 Forest had made the drug very profitable, with yearly revenue of $30 million.

History

Today Forest Laboratories develops and manufactures such drugs as Namenda for Alzheimer’s, Savella for fibromyalgia, Lexapro the antidepressant, Bystolic for hypertension, as well as generic and OTC (over-the-counter) drugs.

Until 2014 Forest was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol FRX. In 2014 the company was acquired by Actavis in a $25 billion deal.
